Job description

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a close knit IT operations team where you will provide day-to-day support and administration for our full DB technology stack across production and non-production environments. You will take on responsibility for production systems data security; database availability; performance and capacity planning; database optimisation, maintenance and architecture. You will work closely with our Engineering and Data Teams to provide DBA support and assistance across a range of development projects, and in-house reporting requirements.

As a DBA you will manage MS SQL and Postgres database estates, operating natively on cloud VM installations, as well as cloud DBaaS namely, CloudSQL (GCP) and RDS (AWS).

Please note - there is an on-call rota for this position on a rotational basis and is compensated.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a performant, optimised and secure database estate, keeping production systems operating to SLA through the high availability of the database infrastructure to minimise the duration and impact of any outages.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance activities, including production systems out-of-hours patching, and to provide support for product deployments, including implementation of schema changes across all database environments.
  • Undertake system health-checks, performance monitoring and diagnosis to identify and to investigate poorly performing production database SQL queries. Work with Developers to remove technical debt to improve the efficiency of systems.
  • Support the development teams to ensure good database design and assist in approval/optimisation of the DB change release processes.
  • Assist with day-to-day management of the database architecture covering production and non-production environments. Build and manage repeatable infrastructure using automation and proactive monitoring.
  • Maintain database applications and configurations to meet security standards, including data risk analysis.
  • Manage data storage and retention include data backup, archiving and secure deletion.
  • Manage data replication and DR environment, perform regular DR testing and proving.
  • Work closely with colleagues from the Operations Support and Data teams to run ad hoc reports and to provide assistance and advise on database querying


Required Skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and resolve complex performance issues.
  • Experience in SQL Server DB administration with a focus on design, performance tuning, optimisation, profiling, and analysis. Good knowledge of database architecture sizing and capacity planning.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • In-depth understanding of database and data security and its application across multiple environments.
  • Background in Infrastructure/ IT Operations.
  • Knowledge of BI reporting packages.
  • Infrastructure as code, CI/CD concepts, managing SQL Server in a cloud environment.
