Job description
The Role:
We are currently looking for a Data Scientist with a strong background in delivering success through building predictive models and classification systems, who can apply these skills within an agile technology start-up working on challenging scientific problems. The role will include building and exploring data sets relating to time series measured data and developing and implementing machine learning models for exploration and prediction. You will have an opportunity to work on leading-edge science and technology, and the results of your work could have a major impact on the way people and systems interact in the future.
The Company:
Telesemica is a recently formed spin-out company established to develop and commercialise a set of novel audio technologies and intellectual property resulting from research carried out by UK MOD. Founded in early 2022, Telesemica is located on the Porton Science Park in Wiltshire, UK.
We are looking for talented, motivated and self-directed people to join our small team of skilled scientists and engineers.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate will have a postgraduate background in data science and/or machine learning, but relevant industrial experience will also be considered. Experience of working on problems involving time series data is desirable. The candidate should be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively within a small team of scientists and engineers, as well as commercial people.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collecting, managing and curating our database of datasets.
- Explore data sets statistically and graphically to understand the datasets and as a pre cursor for modelling assumptions, and modelling selection.
- Working together with in-house scientists to identify key characteristics in the data, develop advanced classification systems and build and then improve predictive models.
- Using Python and potentially other software environments for machine learning, data visualisation and exploration.
- Use and design machine learning for exploration, prediction and to improve quality of data set classification.
- Plan model evaluations including training, test and calibration, and identification of suitable metrics.
- Leverage experiences and technical ‘know-how,’ skills, and techniques from external sources.
Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
- PhD obtained in STEM or quantitative subject, or master’s degree in data science or machine learning (very strong first degree with relevant post graduate academic research in machine learning would be considered).
- 2+ years of data science / machine learning experience beyond postgraduate degree.
- Experience of building data classification systems from scratch, as well as development of deep neural networks for pattern/ event recognition.
- In depth knowledge and experience of machine learning techniques.
- Fluent in Python and familiar with machine learning environments and visualisation tools.
- Problem-solving and highly analytical mindset.
- Interested in analysing and categorising audio data.
- Note: Candidates will need to be able to obtain UK security clearance at SC level as part of their employment. Candidates are strongly encouraged to review the residency and other requirements for SC clearance prior to submitting an application.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
- A strong scientific background with experience of working with other scientists and scientific data.
- Experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Multiple classification/machine learning models.
- Classifying time series data, ideally sounds and speech.
- Data science/machine learning involving numerical or mathematical data.
- Voice recognition, identification or any other machine learning relating to acoustics.
- Working with audio systems and audio data.
- Other machine learning languages and environments, such as R.
What we offer:
- The chance to join a new start-up at the start of an exciting journey.
- The opportunity to work on cutting edge data science and machine learning challenges.
- Flexible working arrangements, including some opportunity to work from home.
- 25 days paid holiday.
- Company pension scheme.
- The opportunity to be considered for employee share option incentive plans.
Equality and Diversity:
Telesemica is an equal opportunity employer. Our goal is to welcome everyone and create inclusive teams. We celebrate difference and encourage everyone to apply – and, if they join us, to be themselves at work.
