Job description

Job title: Data Scientist

Location: Bristol, London, Edinburgh (including hybrid)

Salary: £40,000 - £75,000

Kaluza wants to power a world where net-zero is within everyone's reach, by building the platform that will accelerate a sustainable, affordable and resilient energy transition. It's a huge challenge, but often the toughest problems are the most rewarding to solve.

Since launching in 2019, Kaluza's technology has been empowering some of the biggest energy suppliers to better serve millions of customers.

From revolutionising billing to smart electric vehicle charging, our real-time cloud platforms transform supplier operations, reducing cost to serve and boosting engagement. And most importantly, they enable suppliers' customers to drive decarbonisation with smart, low carbon technologies.

Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?

You'll be working on Kaluza's Flexibility platform. Designed to be the nervous system connecting energy retailers, grid operators, and consumers, Flex will aid us in creating the distributed, consumer-centric, dynamic energy system of the future. Bridging the gap between distributed renewable generation and smart devices, it helps consumers shift their energy consumption to times when there's more renewable energy. This not only saves them money, but enables society as a whole to meet the challenge of decarbonising transport and residential heating/cooling. We're also supporting this vital shift by building the innovative technology behind unique, market-leading customer propositions for our energy retailer partners like Vehicle to Grid and the OVO Charge Anytime Energy Plan.

Within Kaluza Flex, we're a small team of data-led and product focused Software Engineers, Production Engineers and Data Scientists, pushing the boundaries of energy IoT to bring the intelligent zero carbon grid of the future to life. As a collective we strive for engineering greatness and ensuring best practices across the board of the engineering community.

What will I be doing?

You'll be developing optimisation and ML algorithms as part of the flexibility platform. You'll be working on some cutting edge problems such as control of EV charging and optimal energy trading of flexibility

We have a matrixed approach, so you will spend most of your day-to-day being part of a close-knit agile team with several engineers, a product manager and a software engineering manager. You will also be part of the centralised data science & analytics team, sharing best practises and providing a like-minded community.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Creating ML/optimisation algorithms: mainly coding in Python using data technologies including BigQuery, kafka and the GCP cloud environment. We are using micro services which makes it very easy to deploy new features dynamically. We have to solve various problems related to control theory, time series forecasting, bayesian modelling etc.
  • Productise algorithms: getting algorithms into the wild, so they can be tested with customers and improved. Automate, monitor and maintain data science products by following best practice in your use of tooling, alerting and version control (Git).
  • Sharing your experiences and feeding back on other data scientists: we're building a data science community and this role will stimulate a culture of collaboration, openness, and innovation.
  • Contribute to extending the Kaluza Flex Products: We have a lot of data from connected Electric Vehicles and need to control those devices to meet customer needs, balance the grid and develop novel customer propositions for energy retailers. Getting all this together comes through algorithms.

Identifying potential opportunities: Contribute to finding new places that data science could bring value to our products, ensuring the right questions are being asked and identifying where data science can have the biggest impact - and assessing potential risks.

Is this the job for me? It could be if some of these apply

  • You genuinely want to be in the front-line of the climate change battle.
  • You have experience productionising algorithms - across the full data science lifecycle
  • You are a "type-B" data scientist - a builder, engineer & coder - especially using Python
  • You have a solid understanding of statistics, algorithmics, optimisation and modelling techniques
  • You like communicating your knowledge with others - tailoring your approach to the technicality of the audience
  • You are very practical and know when to use the right level of complexity in order to solve actual product problems.
  • You know about working in an agile development environment that employs continuous integration and continuous delivery best practices, and have experience of pair programming, BDD/TDD, CI/CD and deployment strategies

From us you'll get

  • Pension Scheme
  • Kaluza Share Scheme
  • Discretionary Bonus Scheme
  • Private Medical Insurance + Virtual GP
  • Life Assurance
  • Access to Furthr - a Climate Action app
  • Free Mortgage Advice and Eye Tests
  • Perks at Work - access to thousands of retail discounts
  • 5% Flex Fund to spend on the benefits you want most
  • 26 days holiday
  • Progressive leave policies with no qualifying service periods, including 26 weeks full pay if you have a new addition to your family
  • Dedicated personal learning and home office budgets
  • Flexible working — we trust you to work in a way that suits your lifestyle
  • And more…

Even better? You'll have access to these benefits from day 1 when you join.

We want the best people

At Kaluza, we empower our people to have choices around where and when they work - flexible working arrangements can be discussed for all of our roles. Please speak to the Talent Acquisition team for more info. We're keen to meet people with varied backgrounds - our view is the more inclusive we are, the better our work will be.

We want to build teams which represent a variety of experiences, perspectives and skills, and we recognise talent on the basis of merit and potential. We understand some people may not apply for jobs unless they tick every box.

If you're excited about joining us and think you have much of what we're looking for, even if you're not 100% sure… we'd love to hear from you. Learn more about working in Kaluza on our careers page and LinkedIn.
