Be part of building Scotland’s future
Join Scottish Enterprise’s Data and Analytics team as a data scientist, where your skills will be a key part of shaping a digital-first organisation. You’ll also play an important role in Scottish Enterprise’s future – one in which data will play an ever-increasing part.
The role
As a key member of a small data team, you’ll be involved in a range of projects focused on collecting and analysing data. In particular, you’ll use your knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to maintain spatial data and create data models and visualisations.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Acquiring, documenting, cleaning and updating datasets using application programming interfaces (APIs)
- Using GIS tools to produce visualisations from multiple datasets
- Supporting areas of the business in data collection and reporting tasks
Who we're looking for
You’re a confident communicator who leads projects. That means liaising directly with stakeholders to gather and refine requirements, and communicating technical information so that everyone understands. Complex challenges don’t faze you – you’ll be working across multiple project portfolios at once.
Your skills, abilities and experience should include:
- Applying analytical methods to reach accurate and reliable conclusions. This includes exploratory data analysis, statistical testing and data visualisation using RStudio, Power BI, and SQL Server Management Studio, and other Azure platform tools
- A working understanding of GIS and the ability to produce maps linked to data
- An understanding of cleaning and preparing data, the processes and tools involved, and putting reusable processes and checks in place. You can access and use a range of architectures (including cloud and on-premise), and other data manipulation and transformation tools
- Undertaking data profiling and source system analysis. You can present clear insights to colleagues to support the end use of data
- Designing, coding, testing, correcting and documenting simple programs or scripts
Ideally, but not essentially, you’ll also have:
- An understanding of the ethical implications of using data science in your projects
- A working knowledge of GDPR legislation
What we offer
If successful, you'll gain access to the following benefits:
- Membership of the Scottish Enterprise Pension and Life Assurance Scheme – a pension based on your final pensionable salary, flexible retirement options and generous life assurance cover
- Up to 43 annual leave days a year (including public holidays) with the opportunity to buy additional holidays
- Flexible working arrangements
- A health cash plan
- Our Employee Retail Benefits Scheme
- Our Employee Assistance Scheme

If you're interested in this role, please complete your application form by Wednesday 6 September.
Interview dates:
