Data Scientist at Process Integration Limited (PIL)
Start date: To be agreed.
Duration & hours: Full-time permanent contract, 40 hours per week
Salary: Competitive
Workplace: Currently hybrid working pattern of two days in the office in Altrincham, Cheshire, followed by three days home working.
Travel: It is not envisaged that the candidate will travel for business. However, if the demand arises, the candidate will be expected to travel for business.

We are looking for a highly motivated data scientist focusing on machine learning to develop and implement models for complex problem-solving and decision-making at a chemical engineering SME.
Purpose of the role: This role is aimed at a junior-mid level Data Scientist to join the Data Science Team at Process Integration Limited. The team currently has a range of in-house tools to develop models used in the software offered by Process Integration Limited for our clients from the Oil and Gas Industry. The candidate will work on improving these tools per user feedback and enhance them further to widen the capabilities of such models. Simultaneously, the candidate will carry out data-oriented work deemed appropriate for this Data Scientist role. Our team is working on complex processes from the chemical engineering area. Thus, the candidate is expected to deliver machine learning lifecycle, solution architecting, and end-to-end data projects alongside other team members and the team leader. We are looking for a candidate to join our team as a natural course of company growth.
Qualifications: 1-2 years of hands-on experience in Python (inclusive of using Jupyter Notebook) and BSc (or near completion) in Science (such as computer science, mathematics, chemistry, statistics) or Engineering (such as chemical engineering).
Preferred Skills include:
- Strong understanding and hands-on experience using common data frameworks (Scikit-learn, SciPy, NumPy, pandas, statsmodels)
- Strong understanding of core concepts from data science techniques and methods
- Understanding and hands-on experience using deep learning libraries (Keras/TensorFlow or PyTorch)
- Understanding and interest in the full machine learning lifecycle
- Track record of coming up with new ideas in machine learning, as demonstrated by one or more publications or projects.
- Experience working in an Agile delivery framework.
- Exceptional communication skills (inclusive of presenting complex data science projects to a non-technical audience)
These skills would be advantageous:
- Postgraduate (MSc/Ph.D. in Science or Engineering)
- Chemical engineering background
- Programming in GAMS
- Fundamental understanding of relational databases
- Understanding of cloud technologies
- Experience in AWS
- Understanding and hands-on experience in solving complex data-oriented issues, often requiring literature research.
- Knowledge and/or experience in modelling complex engineering processes (for example, crude distillation) from a perspective of data science/machine learning
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
- To further develop in-house tools used to deliver data-driven outcomes to stakeholders.
- To further advance and improve available methods for models’ development used in online optimisation software
- To research the literature to scope out possible pathways of delivering data-oriented methods, as well as architecting and delivery of the solution.
- To support the team with data-oriented issues, providing solutions and advice to reporting line
- To assist with the development of technical presentations, reports, proposals, and documents at the discretion of stakeholders
- To work in the model training area of the projects
- Ad hoc support of other data processes
