Job Title: Data Scientist
Salary: £45,192 to £49,280 plus a location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £45,192 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £49,280 will be via incremental progression.
Location: Sidcup, Hendon, Lambeth, NSY, travel across the MPS and UK is expected. Blended working expected.
The Commissioner and Management Board have determined that the Met will be a data driven organisation. This means treating our data in the same way we treat our people, methods, and technology, as a strategic asset.
The Data Office is the single place of accountability across the Met that:
- Owns and drives the data compliance and analytics agenda.
- Brings together the accountabilities that are currently dispersed across the Met business areas.
- Consolidates and further develops existing Met data and insight services.
- Enables data sharing and collaboration to serve the public and external partners.
Data Office functions:

Directors Office & Business Operations responsible for ensuring the smooth running of governance across Data Office, including meeting management and action tracking.

Office of the DPO: Ensure that the end-to-end process of managing data from its identification and collection through to its eventual disposal is conducted in an efficient, compliant, and secure manner.

Data Analysis & Insight: Dedicated to developing better products to sit alongside and enhance self-service. Responsible for managing the flow of information requests and ensuring all reporting requirements are met. We monitor and ensure the delivery of all data requests, as well as ensuring that all Ad-Hoc and BAU reporting needs are addressed.

Data Science & Engineering: Coordinates all Data Service Improvement and Innovation activities including data innovation, sharing, literacy, partnering, and service improvement and will look to create and embed a culture of continuous improvement across the Met.
- Data Foundations: This is the Data Office’s strategic lead on the core capabilities from the Data Strategy. It encompasses data ethics and standards, learning & development, information management (asset control), data integration, end to end data management, data quality, records management, review, retention, and disposal.
As a data scientist in the Data Science & Engineering team, you will work independently and have a good understanding of a range of topics, including data science techniques, delivery methods and stages (such as minimal viable products), tools and technologies.
Our roles are aligned to the HMG DDaT Capability Framework, and this role relates to a Data Scientist.
At this role level, you will:
- develop complex solutions using a range of data science techniques, whilst understanding any ethical considerations
- understand the role and benefits of data science within the organisation
- support capability building within the organisation
- collaborate with others to develop data science solutions and outputs supporting the organisation
- prepare and manipulate data, and perform complex analytics
- present and communicate effectively

Essential:
- A STEM based degree, or equivalent experience
- Excellent numerical, technical, and analytical skills
- Knowledge of a range of data science methods and techniques, e.g., NLP, Regression, Network analysis
- Programming skills in Python and/or R
- Ability and versatility to pick up new technologies
- The ability to form effective working relationships across all business groups and external business stakeholders
- Ability to translate complex problems into business solutions and communicate them to non-technical stakeholders
Desirable Criteria:
- Awareness of data ethics, privacy, and governance
- Experience working with the Agile methodology
- Understanding of front-end frameworks to support data science solutions
