Flexible Role and Schedule
You will have the opportunity to develop scalable industrial software solutions and models, which are focused, in the beginning, on renewable energy applications. We will later expand this to industrial manufacturing sectors. Though our work is based in Scotland and California, we offer you the ability to develop a flexible, remote/hybrid work schedule. We’d like you to make 1 or 2 visits annually to Southern California to work with colleagues and management there.

The Role: Data Scientist
We are a technology start up with roots in California and Scotland. We are focused on developing cloud and on-site based, AI/ML based technologies to achieve commercial, sustainability and conservation objectives. We are commercializing an innovative new AI/ML framework and methodology that transforms energy production, storage, and deployment through optimizing the performance of expensive, mission critical assets. Our technology will substantially reduce energy production costs, cut machine downtime, and more importantly - produce energy that would otherwise be lost. We are strongly committed to supporting Net Zero 30.
What are we looking for?
As a Data Scientist you create innovative solutions for understanding data patterns and relationships in a range of applications that include energy, oil and gas and industrial manufacturing applications.
We are looking for a focused, and organized individual who is passionate about data. This includes data analytics, including data mining, statistics, machine learning and mathematical modeling and optimization. You excel in designing appropriate methods for industrial data, and you are capable of developing new algorithms designed to address application-specific requirements. You have a knowledge and understanding and passion for statistics, ML/ AI, which form the basis of The Merchant City Technologies development.
California and Scotland
The data scientist will join our engineering team and help us complete the development of new AI/ML products that optimize the performance of critical wind, and hydrogen energy assets as well as industrial manufacturing. You’ll join a close-knit team of software developers and data scientists in California and Scotland committed to delivering on the promise of our unique offering. Specifically, you will work closely with principal data scientist and product management engineer.
The Role
You will develop solutions that play a significant part in our product development process. You will collect, integrate, and analyze data to help our customers optimize their machines and production processes. Your creativity, skills and leadership will help shape our energy asset optimization solutions.
This is a role for person who is curious and who thrives in a fast-paced, learning based environment. Your role and responsibilities vary from day to day but will include.
· Support the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) applications for the energy, oil and gas and manufacturing sectors.
- Design, develop, and deliver data analytics models and solutions predict future events for customers and their assets.
- Create a first-class data analysis capability across targeted sectors.
- This is a hands-on role that will require the successful candidate to lead product development initiatives and technical team meetings.
- Research and develop new technologies as they appear in industry and academia and know how to integrate these new technologies into our software applications.
- Develop, review, and enhance the code base.
- Add to Merchant City Technologies intellectual property.
- Follow standard processes for speedy development, new features and functionalities, source code management, testing and validation.
- Partner with customers, and product managers, to understand customer needs, transforming them into product requirements document (PRD) to drive adoption.
Requirements
- BSc in Science or Engineering with quantitative focus, such as Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Chemometrics, Econometrics, AI, or a related quantitative field; MSc or PhD preferred.
- Two + years of experience in data roles, including data analysis, algorithm, development/programming, web, and app development.
- Experience in Python programming, including data science specific packages, such as Kubernetes, Pandas, NumPy, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-Learn, Knowledge in C++ or C#.
- Experience with time series data analysis, predictive analytics, and/or machine learning algorithms, data mining.
- Experience with SCADA systems helpful.
- Familiar with user-machine interface designs.
- Experience with web and app development a plus.
- Domain experience within energy and manufacturing sectors helpful.
- Strong problem-solving ability and analytics skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing/presentation skills.
- Strong work ethic with a desire to grow knowledge independently.
- Experience working with US companies is a plus.
