UC Data Scientists work closely with the cross-disciplinary development teams that are designing and delivering new features for the Universal Credit digital service. We use our expertise in UC datasets and data science techniques to ensure the development of the service is supported by data, helping to improve outcomes for UC claimants and DWP staff.
Job description
Data Scientists are aligned to a specific team, working collaboratively with colleagues from a range of different digital professions to advocate for the use of data.
The work in this area is our “business as usual” activity, typified by the product development requests that are commissioned by our primary stakeholders, which include feature discovery & prioritisation, hypothesis testing, trial & feature evaluation and success measures.
In addition, Data Scientists are expected to contribute to the delivery of cross-cutting Data Science projects, aiming to develop our technical capabilities in areas such as machine learning, visualisation and experimentation.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

HEO:
Salary for this role at HEO in National locations is from £34,173 (Band min) to £34,971 (Band max).
Where the maximum salary of £34,971 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £9,050 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.
Salary for this role at HEO in London is from £39,150 (Band min) to £39,777 (Band max).
Where the maximum salary of £39,777 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £4,244 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.
SEO:
Salary for this role at SEO in National locations is from £38,469 (Band min) to £41,480 (Band max).
Where the maximum salary of £41,480 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £14,421 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.
Salary for this role at SEO in London is from £43,755 (Band min) to £45,919 (Band max).
Where the maximum salary of £45,919 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £9,982 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Stage 1: Application
Your application will consist of three parts:
1. A Personal Details application form.
2. Your employment history detailing your responsibilities, skills, accomplishments, plus your qualifications and relevant training. Please copy this information into the box field provided.
3. Personal statement up to 750 words.

- Academic background in Maths, Statistics, Computer Science or similar Data Science-related experience and aptitude.
- Hands-on experience delivering innovative, data-driven solutions to solve business problems or improve established processes.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and experience working with colleagues to understand their requirements and deliver complex analytical projects in a timely manner.
- Being proactive in recognising opportunities to use Data Science to contribute to team or wider organisational priorities.

Stage 2: Interview
If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the experiences listed below:
- Hands-on experience delivering innovative, data-driven solutions to solve business problems or improve established processes.
- Strong stakeholder management skills and experience working with colleagues to understand their requirements and deliver complex analytical projects in a timely manner.
- Being proactive in recognising opportunities to use Data Science to contribute to team or wider organisational priorities.
- Ability to communicate results to a range of audiences, translating technical concepts into non-technical language where necessary.
- Understanding of a range of data science techniques and the ability to apply these to practical situations.
- Ability to explore, combine and transform data from across disparate sources, writing code in appropriate technologies that is testable and scalable.
- Experience of using R/Python/SQL.
You will be asked to do a short (10 minutes) presentation on a specific topic. Further details will be provided to candidates invited to interview.
Interviews will take place from early-May 2023.
