About UrbanLogiq
At UrbanLogiq - we help build better communities with data!
UrbanLogiq offers an integrated data visualization and analytics platform to governments. Founded in 2016, UrbanLogiq is one of the global govtech industry's fastest growing start-ups and we want you to join our team.
UrbanLogiq exclusively serves public government agencies providing them with cloud-based SaaS solutions that help them better create, manage, use, and consume insights from data, making government services more efficient and effective.
Our mission is to democratize cutting-edge data science and software services for governments of all shapes and sizes, paving the way for stronger, safer, better-connected communities. UrbanLogiq's award winning software is currently used by government agencies across Canada and the US.
About the Role
UrbanLogiq seeks data-driven solutions to problems facing our communities. As a result we have a large number of data engineering challenges and we are currently seeking to bolster our team with a talented senior data engineer.
At UrbanLogiq, our expectations of a senior engineer are not that you are a person who just knows how to write code but someone who can also help grow our team. We expect that you are able to mentor and grow our team, both those within our data engineering family as well as grow influence across our technical organization.
UrbanLogiq is a startup and plans to hold on to our startup scrappyness as long as we can. While we are looking for someone to fill the role of senior data engineer, we occasionally have to call all hands on deck in other development domains. We need someone who is comfortable and willing to help out the team when needed, no matter what the task is.
You have grit and determination. You don't stop until the problem is solved. Sometimes you find that you need to trade off the optimal technical solution for a hack, or grinding through a task versus building automation, and you are okay with that. But you also know when to go back and do it the right way.
You are comfortable with Python due to its place within the current data engineering ecosystem. You are also comfortable either with writing Rust, or learning Rust, because of its emerging importance. (Also because the UrbanLogiq backend is written in Rust.)
Requirements
- At least three years software development experience at a senior level (senior, staff, or principal)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. The ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people is essential to success in this role
- Experience mentoring and growing team members
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience as a software engineer
- Experience developing in Python
- Experience developing in Rust (or other systems language like C++)
- Experience optimizing and debugging software
Nice To Haves
- Experience developing and managing efficient pipelined operations – preferably data but also asset or build pipelines; and/or
- Experience developing and deploying machine (or deep) learning systems; and/or
- Experience extracting data from source files like Excel spreadsheets or PDFs into a data processing environment; and/or
- Experience with managing graph-represented data; and/or
- Experience monitoring the quality of work, both of the code and the data generated/processed by it
If you're passionate about building innovative solutions that can make a positive impact on cities and communities, and are excited about working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, we'd love to hear from you.
