Milliman is seeking a Data ETL (extract, transform, load) Engineer to join our Health Research Team. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and integrity of our medical claims data processing workflows. The successful candidate will partner with other Health Research Team professionals to write and maintain translation and loading routines, run software for grouping and categorizing data, and maintain up-to-date process documentation and client-facing reference documentation. In addition, this function will develop new programs to replace on-prem data refresh processes with cloud-based data refresh processes that are performed in AWS Databricks and standalone EC2 instances.
This position reports to the Health Research Team DevOps Manager.
Additional Responsibilities
- Design and implement efficient data processing workflows of very large volumes of medical claims data.
- Develop and optimize routines for ETL procedures.
- Utilize homegrown and public software and frameworks to augment medical claims data.
- Develop and implement data quality checks and validation procedures to identify and resolve inconsistencies or errors in the processed data.
- Collaborate with analysts, consultants, and subject matter experts to endure high quality and reliable output.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation related to process workflow, ETL routines and data field definitions. Keep documentation up to date in a changing environment.
- Monitor and optimize data workflows to enhance efficiency, reduce processing time and expense, improve scalability, identify, and implement performance tuning techniques.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to understand their requirements and provide data engineering support.
- Adhere to data security and privacy regulations and Milliman policies while handling sensitive medical claims data.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science, data science, information systems or related field
- Two or more years' experience working with medical data
- Strong programming skills such as Python, R, Spark or Scala. Currently, Python, SQL and SAS are the most common languages used by the Health Research Team.
- Solid understanding of ETL pipelines and data warehousing principles
- Preferred experience migrating SAS to Databricks environments
- Proficiency working with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Spark etc.
- Excellent problem-solving ability
- Attention to detail, with a commitment to data accuracy and integrity
- Candidates hired into this role will be required to work in-person in the Milliman office in Chicago, IL on a weekly basis, but flexible work arrangements will be considered.
