Fletchers is a rapidly growing law firm specialising in personal injury and clinical negligence law. Over the last three years, we have had a small but successful data science project developing and implementing a decision-support neural network, and now are building our data science team and capabilities. This small but growing team will be tasked with developing and deploying a range of ML tools within our firm, with the potential to commercialise these to the wider industry in the future. By leveraging the wealth of legal-medical data that Fletchers has, and the funding provided by our Private Equity owners, we will further develop our sector-specific ML tools. Our initial focus is on NLP tools for supporting or automating legal tasks, and decision-support systems, which we are developing through an experimental project that reports directly to the executive team.
We are based in the North-West of the UK, with offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds & Southport, although many of our colleagues work primarily from home. Our existing AI project team is spread across Cambridge, London, Manchester & Preston and will include PhD students at the University of Liverpool.
We are looking for an experienced data engineer to join our team and establish the fundamental data structures and pipelines for the deployment of Machine Learning & data analytics tools. You will use various methods to transform both raw and structured data into useful systems, collaborating with data scientists and the infrastructure team to build efficient and scalable ML pipelines. For example, you will implement robust data extraction pipelines from SQL databases, word & pdf files, to build specialised databased for ML tools for specific business needs. Generally, youll strive for efficiency by aligning data systems and structures with the business goals.
To succeed in this data engineering position, you should have strong analytical skills, the ability to combine data from different sources, and good communication skills to continuously align with our data strategy. You will have a clear understanding of what good looks like and be comfortable building this from the ground up. Your will happy using your expertise to influence design choices for how we use data in different departments and applications.

Main Responsibilities:
- Analyse and organize raw data from a range of sources (SQL databases, legal case management systems, unstructured word documents, pdf files, etc.)
- Build data systems and pipelines that facilitate efficient and scalable deployment of ML tools, produced by the data science team
- Conduct complex data analysis and report on results & trends
- Prepare data for prescriptive and predictive modelling
- Explore ways to enhance data quality and reliability
- Identify opportunities for data acquisition
- Collaborate with our data science and infrastructure teams across several projects
Requirements and skills:
Required:
- Proficiency with and good understanding of Python
- Previous experience as a data engineer or a similar role, with experience building new data environments & pipelines
- Hands-on experience with a variety of database technologies
- Experience with data models, data mining, and segmentation techniques
- Familiarity with and understanding of ETL tools
- Great numerical and analytical skills
Desirable:
- Previous experience with Azure
- Knowledge of Machine Learning
- Data engineering certification (e.g. IBM Certified Data Engineer)
