Senior Data Engineer

Hours: Full time 35 hours per week
We're open to a variety of ways of working, including full time, part time, job share and compressed hours.
Location: Stratford, London. Office-based with high flexibility (1-2 days per week in the office)

We’re searching for a Senior Data Engineer to play an influential role in our ambitious approach to data. Ensuring our data is a key asset for the organisation is a critical part of this challenge. We aim to improve the charity’s existing data products, whilst defining our engineering data and insights strategy. As a Senior Data Engineer, you’ll be a part of this journey by delivering and driving tangible outcomes within our Data Portfolio. This will entail creating and maintaining data integrations; supporting data change, work requests, and incident management; and contributing to the Team’s continuous improvement and learning & development to build Cancer Research UK’s Data resilience.
If you are a Data Engineer with extensive Python experience who has operated within a modern, AWS, cloud-based environment, we want you to join our mission.
What will I be doing?
- Operating according to the priorities set by our Data Portfolio product management team
- Contributing to Data Engineering team standards, patterns, automation, and tooling
- Contributing to workload & prioritisation discussions across the team and our stakeholders
- Contributing to architectural discussions and driving continuous improvement
- Collaborating closely with the requirements owner to identify end user/business needs
- Providing solution overviews and work packages when assigning work to other team members
- Producing and reviewing designs aligned with the Cancer Research UK architecture models and agreed design patterns approved by the Solution Architect
- Collaborating with Product Managers to provide input for planning and estimating
- Developing new and enhanced solutions in line with IT strategy; identifying opportunities for increased stability and efficiency improvements, and making recommendations for prioritisation
- Operating in line with Agile project delivery methodologies and ITIL frameworks
- Ensuring timely production of deliverables and providing progress updates to our stakeholders
- Partnering with Quality Assurance to ensure that test plans and test cases are targeted effectively and providing iterative builds for testing against prioritised requirements
- Collaborating with Support Analysts and Service Delivery Managers to ensure that solutions are fully understood and accepted into service
- Providing 3rd line support for production services
- Supporting team learning, development, planning, and recruitment
What skills are you looking for?
- Experienced Data Engineer with demonstrable experience using modern cloud technologies (including AWS architecture & services)
- Has utilised SQL for both database development and analysis purposes
- Background in integrating ETL/ELT concepts, patterns, and CI/CD pipelines
- Relevant experience using tools and scripting languages to extract and load data (e.g., Python, Glue, Spark)
- Practical knowledge of networking fundamentals and security
