Job title: Lead Data Engineer - Synapse

Reports to: Data & Analytics Team Lead

Location: Leeds or Manchester / Remote working available with travel to BCN offices and client sites monthly as and when needed

Hours: Monday to Friday 9:00am to 5:30pm – 37.5 hours per week

You will be joining a data and analytics team who are a critical part of the company, whose mission is to help the company and our clients make better decisions through data driven insights.

To achieve this, you will be accountable for the following:

  • Design and implement end-to-end data engineering solutions using Azure Synapse Analytics.
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines to extract, transform, and load (ETL) data from various sources into Azure Synapse.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver effective data solutions.
  • Optimize data storage, data partitioning, and data compression strategies to improve query performance and reduce costs.
  • Ensure data integrity, quality, and security across all data pipelines and data stores.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines and resolve any performance or reliability issues.
  • Implement and enforce data governance and data management best practices.
  • Conduct performance tuning and optimization of SQL queries and data processing jobs.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and advancements in Azure Synapse Analytics and recommend innovative solutions to enhance data engineering capabilities.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to more junior team members.

Person, Skills
and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
  • Strong experience in designing and implementing data engineering solutions using Azure Synapse Analytics.
  • Proficiency in SQL, T-SQL, and other query languages.
  • Extensive knowledge of data integration and ETL concepts and tools.
  • Solid understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and data governance principles.
  • Experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, and other Azure data services.
  • Familiarity with big data technologies such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, and Azure Databricks.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex data engineering issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Azure certifications related to data engineering or data analytics are highly desirable.
  • Confident to work individually on projects as well as part of a team
  • Understanding of Azure DevOps Pipelines would be advantageous
