Job description
*** This is a fully remote position. We are targeting candidates in Central and Eastern US time zones ***
We are a team on a mission, to put accessible and affordable healthcare in the hands of every person on earth. It's a bold and ambitious mission, and to achieve it, our team needs to share the values of dreaming big, building fast and being brilliant.
To achieve this, we've brought together one of the largest teams of scientists, clinicians, mathematicians and engineers to focus on combining the ever-growing computing power of machines, with the best medical expertise of humans, to create a comprehensive, immediate and personalized health service and make it universally available.
At Babylon our people aren't just part of a team, they're part of something bigger. We're a vibrant community of creative thinkers and doers, forging the way for a new generation of healthcare. We're only as good as our people. So, finding the best people is everything to us. We serve millions, but we choose our people one at a time…
The Role
Data forms the lifeblood of Babylon and plays a crucial role in achieving our vision. As a Babylon Data Engineer, you will be at the forefront of our data engineering efforts, and this is far from an average back office role. In this position, you will:
- Collaborate with product and business domains to design and construct data processing pipelines
- Work closely with data scientists and researchers to shape our AI capabilities and deepen our understanding of a member's health through our Health Graph
- Architect large-scale, complex datasets and establish standards to ensure consistency and ease of use across database models
- Develop and implement automated monitoring processes to ensure high-quality data for both internal and external stakeholders
- Uphold strong Data Governance practices to guarantee the accuracy of our data models
- Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts to translate requirements into scalable solutions
About the Product:
Our Health Graph is a dynamic platform that continuously expands as we gain insights into our members. It leverages cutting-edge technology such as Kafka and OpenSearch, adheres to industry standards like FHIR, and incorporates our proprietary knowledge base and intelligent applications. This holistic approach creates a fully normalized, active graph view (QL) of our members' health. Additionally, we have agents that can deduce new knowledge and trigger actions based on changes in a member's profile. While we have made significant progress, we are far from finished. Exciting challenges lie ahead, such as integrating our real-time Health Graph with our offline analytics and intelligence platforms.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
You must possess a deep understanding of the follow:
- Python coding
- SQL
- Data Modeling
- One Data Processing Engine (e.g. Spark, Flink or Trino)
Ideally, you should also have experience in one or more of the following:
- An Orchestration Framework (e.g. Airflow, Beam)
- Distributed systems, Event-Driven Architectures and Kafka
- Search Engines (Elasticsearch)
Note: Quality is of paramount importance to us as we deal with our members' health. Therefore, we expect the highest level of discipline when it comes to testing. You should be well-versed in writing secure, scalable, and performant code for cloud environments. Your code should be clean, maintainable, and readable, and you should have no qualms about creating documentation when necessary. Running code is just as important as writing it, and you should possess knowledge of writing runbooks, monitoring systems, and setting up effective alerts. We encourage experimentation and foster an active presence in our communities. Many of our team members actively promote Babylon's work through conferences, blogs, and articles.
