Job description
Within Wincanton, a Data Analyst’s role will encompass collating, organising and studying data to provide business insight. In this role, you will:
- Apply tools and techniques for data analysis and data visualisation (including the use of business information tools)
- Identify, collect and migrate data to and from a range of systems
- Manage, clean, abstract and aggregate data alongside a range of analytical studies on that data
- Manipulate and link different data sets
- Summarise and present data and conclusions in the most appropriate format for users
Duties and responsibilities:
- Analysis and understanding of both structured and un-structured data, data sets, data models, canonical models, data standards and data types
- Domain specific data management, including data governance and data stewardship
- Data modelling, data cleansing, and data enrichment skills.
- Production of data models and understand where to use different types of data models.
- Summary understanding of different data analysis tools and data modelling techniques.
- Ability to reverse-engineer a data model from live systems or “in flight” projects
- Understand industry recognised data-modelling patterns and standards.
- Knowledge of tools required to visualise data to tell compelling and actionable stories relevant for business goals.
- Problems solving, including resolving data issues encountered in databases, data processes, data products and services.
- Service monitoring, trend analysis, remedial and pro-active preventative actions.
- Quality assurance and validation, including the ability to decide if data is accurate and fit for purpose
Typical Outputs:
- Production of domain specific data models, business intelligence, analytics, operational and transactional reports
- Domain specific collection, transformation, storage, and securing of relevant data.
- Domain specific safeguarding of data, including its completeness, validity, accuracy, consistency, integrity, and timeliness.
- Custody of domain specific master and transactional data and data dictionaries.
Experience, skills and attributes:
- Significant experience in data modeling, business intelligence and reporting
- Previous experience of working with common analytics and reporting languages and related technologies such as SQL, Unix, Python etc.
- Data modelling experience using at least one leading modeling capability (can be inherent within a BI tool)
- Experience of data modelling techniques and approaches—canonical, conceptual, logical & physical; and their practical application (ideally within a retail business)
- Awareness of technologies and approaches to both integration and analytics, as well as the emerging domains of data science, machine learning, AI & cognitive
- Good interpersonal skills in areas such as teamwork, facilitation and common goal achievement
- Strong Problem-solving and analytical skills
- A methodical and logical approach
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- First class written skills
- Strong communication skills, especially in terms of replaying understanding of requirements to users, stakeholders and internal IT teams
- Experience of structured delivery methodologies, both traditional and more modern agile techniques
- Experience in logistics and of supply chain technologies beneficial
