Job summary
The Department for International Trade (DIT) has overall responsibility for developing, coordinating and delivering trade and investment policy for the UK. This post is in the Midlands Team in DIT’s English Regions. The English Regions is at the forefront of enabling and providing support to encourage companies to begin exporting, to support existing exporters to grow the value of exports, and to support high quality investment in the UK.
The Midlands Team spans both trade and investment and covers a combined region that has a GVA of £220bn pa, 11.5m people, 25 universities and exports of some £48.3bn pa. The team sits literally in the centre of the country and plays a pivotal role in not only developing a better case for the Midlands globally but also within the Department. The team has offices in both Birmingham and Nottingham and play a leading role in driving regional export performance and an Investment Hub which provides a focus for pan Midlands Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
The core role of DIT in the English regions is to provide international support for business at a local level to drive growth and prosperity. We achieve this by:
- Impactful use of our resources in a targeted way to have the biggest impact on English regional economies
- Using convening power to help increase the combined impact of central government and local partners/stakeholders
The Postholder will play an important role in supporting the Business Engagement Team to raise awareness of and increase take up of DIT services amongst target audiences. This includes gathering, cleansing, and studying data and insights to help solve problems and develop informed decisions.

Key Responsibilities
As our Client Analyst, you will be a key part of the Business Engagement Team, which aims to engage new to DIT companies, provide consistent touchpoints for current clients and re-engage with those businesses who have become lapsed.
The below summary highlights keys areas of day-to-day responsibilities:
- Gather data:
Identify and source data from various sources including specific aggregators such as Beauhurst, Experian and self-sourced data via client surveys, website scrapping, enquiries, partner databases and business attendance at external expos etc.
- Aggregate data:
Work with the wider DIT Export network to identify potential related data source which are not full utilised by DIT Midlands, including Export Academy, Export Support Service and our Overseas Network and Marketing Hubs.
- Disseminate data:
Lead on providing a regular feed of high-quality new leads into our Lead Generation team. This will also involve providing segmented and targeted data feeds for wider comms and activity campaigns.
- Data cleansing:
Managing and maintaining our internal CRM System ‘DataHub’. Including the development of a bi-annual client surveys to gain greater customer insight and harvest refreshed leads.
- Model data:
Build data segmentation models to help better analyse our contacts and to build reports on demand/engagement to support in future campaign development. Including track lead sources, effectiveness of a wide range of promotional channels such as email, social media, partner promotion etc.
- Interpret data:
Interpreting data to highlight trends, ROI, impact of campaigns, effectiveness of data sources.
- Present:
Communicate the results of your findings by creating and managing a engagement dashboard that covers full range of demand generation and impact metrics.
- Business Engagement
To support and assist the wider Business Engagement team in identifying new channels for promotion and engagement with relevant businesses across the Midlands.
Hybrid working
The role will be based in either Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
Appointments will be made to candidates in merit order based on location preferences.

Essential Criteria
The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate capability in the following areas:
- Ability to multi-task, prioritise, and manage time effectively
- Self-motivated and extremely focused with an analytical mind-set
- Excellent analytical skills and communication skills
- Experience of using Microsoft Office 365
- Advanced understanding of GDPR requirements and compliance.
- The ability to analyse, model and interpret data. Problem-solving skills. A methodical and logical approach
- The ability to plan work and meet deadlines
- Proactive, can-do attitude and willingness to get stuck in on a range of projects
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of working with a business-to-business support environment
- Advanced user of MS Excel
- General understanding of International Trade (Exporting)
- Institute of Export (IoE) qualification
- CIM/Marketing qualification

Selection process details
This recruitment is continuing as usual, but candidates should be aware that following a Government announcement on the changes to some civil service departments, roles will be located in the new Department for Business and Trade.
Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
