Job Description
Data Analyst (Data Science) Apprentice – Level 4
Location: Norwich
Are you fascinated by data and technology, and all the things it can do? If so, with Aviva, you could train to become a Data professional – one of the most sought-after skill sets of recent years!
We truly believe our Data community is amongst the most experienced and supportive anywhere. Join us as an apprentice and you will have a permanent role from day one, you’ll earn a salary, as well as working towards a recognised qualification (equivalent to a foundation degree) and learning from some of the most inspirational people in Data. No previous experience is needed – you bring the passion and potential, and we will provide the training and learning opportunities!
About the role
Our Data Apprenticeship Pathway is designed for creative and innovative people who want to learn how to apply the best computer science, engineering, statistics, and machine learning techniques to our market leading data sets.
There are lots of different types of data roles that specialise in different areas. Your apprenticeship will ensure you learn the core fundamentals and will give you a great grounding into a wide variety of data principles and practices.
You could be spending your time in one or more of the following areas:
- Data Science & Analytics – using all kinds of scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from data.
- Data Engineering - designing and building the systems we use to collect, store, and analyse data.
- Reporting & Business Intelligence – looking at how we analyse and visualise information to help make smarter business decisions.
- Data Analysis - working closely with colleagues internally to answer questions and make decisions about the products and services we provide.
Your apprenticeship is an 18-month programme where you’ll spend 80% of your time gaining real hands-on experience in the role and 20% dedicated to your Apprenticeship studies. Once you have completed the Level 4 course (equivalent to a foundation degree) there will be opportunities for further study, if you choose – you might want to enrol on a higher-level apprenticeship course that could see you gain a BSc Degree for example or do some specific technical development relevant to your role.
You’ll also become a member of our global data community, Aviva Quantum, and enjoy all the benefits that come with being part of a global group of data professionals, such as sharing knowledge and on-hand expertise and support from a global community of experts who want to help you succeed. Taken together, this is a brilliant learning environment – a place where everyone is welcome to share ideas, ask questions and seek out advice.
What’s in it for you?
- Starting salary of £21,700 including paid Apprenticeship study time
- A permanent role right from the outset – you’ll be taught and developed from the ground up by tackling real responsibilities
- A recognised qualification: Level 4 Apprenticeship (Data Analyst) with options for further study once achieved
- A caring, welcoming culture complete with wellbeing programmes and flexible working (we call it Smart working)
- A great support network of colleagues, leaders, mentors, buddies and other apprentices – many of whom have been with us for years
- A holiday allowance of 25 days, plus bank holidays and the option to buy/sell up to five additional days
- An annual performance-related bonus and pay review
- Generous defined contribution pension scheme
- Plus plenty more
What do we look for?
New insights, perspectives and diversity of thought are all invaluable to us. We have Apprentices who have studied everything from Music to Maths to History, and they’re all equally brilliant. For these roles you’ll need to:
- Have, or be on track to achieve, at least three A Levels (grades B, C, C or above) or four Scottish Highers (grades B,B,B,C or above) – or a Level 3 equivalent qualification. If one of these subjects is in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths) subject that’s great, but by all means it is not a requirement!
- Have at least five GCSEs or Scottish National 5s at A*-C or 9-4 grade (or equivalent), including English and Maths
- Have an understanding or experience of data and technology, whether that be through your studies or as an outside passion for self-learning. Experience of Python, R or SQL programming would be great, but we will provide training so this is not essential.
You’ll also be a confident communicator with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a love of learning and a commitment to continually developing yourself. You’re someone who can be a force for change and who’ll be able to show us how you’ve helped to change things for the better in your studies, your work experience or your outside interests. And it goes without saying that we’ll be looking to see that you have a genuine curiosity in technology and data.
Where will you be based?
We offer these Data Apprentice roles in our Norwich office, Aviva’s largest office location, sat in central Norwich.
It is likely that you’ll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this Smart Working. 3 days in the office, and 2 days from home per week is a very typical example but will vary between teams. When you join us, your leader will take time to discuss this with you, and agree what works best for you, your team and the organisation.
It’s important to note that even though we work this office/home blend, you will need to live within a commutable distance of the office. That way you will get to spend time with your team in person as well as virtually and get access to the right support networks internally to help you to succeed.
