Job summary:

The Home Office is looking for individuals with an enquiring mind who care about the detail and have a passion for Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT). You do not need related qualifications or previous experience – we are particularly interested in your passion for a career in DDaT, your attitude and your potential.

Responsibilities:

  • As a Cyber Security Technologist apprentice, you will apply an understanding of cyber security to protect the Home Office systems, information, personal data and people from attacks and unauthorised access.
  • Cyber Security Technologists all require an understanding of security concepts and technology and how to mitigate risks arising from threats. The specific tasks undertaken vary depending on what needs to be achieved by the team at any particular time. Some tasks may be very technical, others may be more analytical, business or user-focused.
  • You will develop and apply practical knowledge of information security to deliver solutions that fulfil Home Office requirement.
  • Depending on the role given, you will be competent in either
  • Cyber Security Engineer - this is the most technology focused role will typically design, build and test secure networks or security products or systems with a particular focus on the security aspects of the design.
  • Cyber Risk Analyst - this focuses on risk assessment, analysis and giving advice on risk mitigations. The roles may support formal security governance, regulatory & compliance (GRC).
  • Cyber Defender & Responder - this is more operationally focused, configuring and operating secure systems to prevent security breaches or monitoring systems to detect and respond to security breaches.

Salary:

National: £25,750 - £27,650 per annum

London: £29,750 - £31,950 per annum

  • Being an effective written and verbal communicator with an ability to tailor messaging to changing audiences.
  • Analytical skills, with the ability to analyse and identify patterns in information, trends, emerging issues, data errors and anomalies.
  • Experience working in an IT environment.
  • Critical thinking and the ability to investigate, evaluate information and reach conclusions.
  • Researching and keeping abreast of latest cyber threats and countermeasures.
  • Core networking concepts related to your role and some experience of networks and IT Operations.
  • Building strong partnerships with diverse teams across multiple locations and technologies.
  • Confident working on computers and be able to use programmes such as Microsoft Office suite - Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel.

Desirable criteria:

  • Engineering design principles and standards and how they apply to your work.
  • Producing high-quality outputs in a timely manner and in a language that is suitable for the intended audience.
  • Some knowledge of cyber risk and controls frameworks.
  • A Level in IT

To be eligible for the apprenticeship:

You should be committed to spend 20% of your working time on learning activity. The expectation is that apprentices are employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Need to ensure you meet Government requirement to complete an apprenticeship:

  • You must work at least 50% of the time in England.
  • Valid passport/birth certificate and NI number.
  • Not undertaking another apprenticeship or government funded qualification at the same time.
  • These roles are ideal for candidates who have ‘not studied to degree level and are looking to develop their knowledge and skills whilst in employment’.
  • Should have GCSE grade ‘C’ or above in Maths and English, or the equivalent, such as key skills or functional skills. If you do not or are unable to provide evidence of this (e.g., certificate), then you will be required to complete Level 2 functional skills during the apprenticeship programme with support.
  • You must not hold a qualification at or above Level 4 in a similar subject. You can hold a qualification in a related subject area at a lower level, e.g., Level 3 (or A-Level equivalent). You may also be ineligible if you have substantial experience in the role for which you are applying, as an apprenticeship must provide you with a significantly new skill set / skills uplift.
