Customer Service Assistant Taunton, England

Somerset County Council
Full Time Taunton, England 21968 - 26146 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Why should I choose Somerset Council?

Good question.

Well, for a start, we’re a hugely ambitious council, committed to improving lives for the residents, communities and businesses of Somerset.

And that’s why we’re working so hard to build a sustainable organisation with a culture that rewards, values and recognises our staff, and gives everyone here the opportunity to grow and develop, personally and professionally.

If you’re looking for a place where you work truly matters – where YOU truly matter – we might be just right for you.

The role is based in our refurbished, modern offices in County Hall, in Taunton, We also promote a healthy work-life balance and offer flexible working arrangements wherever possible, including hybrid working once trained.

What will I be doing?

We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that.

We are looking for a Customer Service Admin Assistant to join our award-winning Customer Service Team here at Somerset Council, in the Children’s team. The vast majority of this role is not customer facing and therefore may suit someone who enjoys working quietly and methodically.

You will be dealing with electronic referrals and emails which may occasionally result in making calls to a professional for any additional information, but you will not be expected to receive or make calls to members of the public.

We are the front door for the Children’s services provided by Somerset County Council; the role is incredibly interesting

Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • Communicating with professionals and members of the public via email about a range of queries such as safeguarding concerns and Special Educational Needs queries
  • Logging Police Reports on the Childrens Social Care system
  • Data inputting electronic referrals

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you:

  • Good IT skills – you will need to learn how to use various systems, Teams, Excel, Word etc
  • A keen eye for detail – you will be inputting highly sensitive data
  • An efficient, professional work ethic are highly desirable traits for this role.
  • It is not essential to have knowledge of the children’s services provided by Somerset Council, but any understanding is beneficial. Whether that be from personal experience from you or your family, or from working in an education or childcare setting.
  • Able to follow (sometimes repetitive) processes accurately and correctly.
  • Due to the nature of the work you need resilience and an enthusiasm to learn about our services.

We’re proud to be here for the people of Somerset. And that means everyone in Somerset. An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences to enrich our team. You can always contact the hiring manager for a chat if there’s anything you want to talk about before you apply.

What will I be offered in return?

We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do to improve the lives of people in Somerset.

We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management. As well as this, we have some fantastic employee benefits available:

  • We promote a healthy work-life balance and offer flexible working arrangements wherever possible, including working from home.
  • Generous annual leave allowance, with the opportunity to purchase additional leave
  • Staff discounts in gyms.
  • Employee Assistance for the times you may need some support and a variety of employee wellbeing services.
  • Auto enrolment onto our generous Pension Scheme and optional pension enhancement through our Additional Voluntary Contribution scheme.
  • A Flexible Benefits Scheme via salary sacrifice to obtain a cycle for work and health screenings.
  • My Staff Shop offering discounts in shops, online shopping, restaurants, cinema tickets, insurance benefits and more

Anything else I should know?

On 1st April 2023, the County and District councils in Somerset were replaced by a new single unitary authority – Somerset Council. It’s an exciting time to join us as we work together to deliver the new council for Somerset.

This is a permanent position, 37 hours per week our shift working hours are between 8.30am and 5pm. However, for the right candidate we can be flexible with the hours.

The salary for this role is £20,812 to £21,189 pet annum (pro rata for part time)

For an informal chat about the role, you can contact Sarah Battersby 01823 359910 [email protected] or Tom Brogan [email protected]

Shortlisting will take place as the applicants are received so please do not wait to apply - Interviews will take place at County Hall and will include a basic test to ensure you can find important details from a fictional police report.

If you have all the information you need, just hit the apply button. We can’t wait to hear from you!
