If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you to become the first point of contact for our valued customers and visitors at Shepton Mallet Prison.
In this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring our visitors have a memorable experience while exploring this historical site.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Greet visitors warmly, check tickets, and facilitate the smooth running of tours and activities
- Handle phone calls, respond to customer inquiries, and assist with bookings and payments
- Possess extensive knowledge of our products and effectively communicate information to visitors
- Handle cash transactions and complete cashing up procedures
- Contribute to the opening and closing of the Visitor Centre, while supporting general cleaning tasks around the site to enhance the customer experience
- Ensure the Visitor Centre, Gift Shop, and Cafe are well-stocked, clean, and promoted
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in the Cafe area
Personal Requirements:
- Excellent communication skills, both in person and over the phone
- Confidence in addressing questions on the spot and handling customer inquiries via email
- Ability to work independently, take responsibility, and show initiative
- Patience and tactfulness in dealing with a diverse range of visitors
- Strong organisational skills to manage various tasks effectively
- Problem-solving abilities and logical thinking
- Enthusiasm for the role and a flexible attitude towards working hours
- Keen attention to detail
- Personable, outgoing, reliable, and responsible nature
- A passion for history and the preservation of historical buildings
Desired Experience:
- Prior experience in customer-facing roles
- Proficiency in cash handling and reconciliations
- Understanding of food hygiene practices
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
- While extensive knowledge of the prison and prison life is not required, a willingness to learn is highly valued

Shepton Mallet Prison is a heritage led tourist attraction. Built in 1625, it is the oldest prison in the UK and one of the oldest in the world.
Opening in 2017, Shepton Mallet Prison began its journey of developing into a heritage attraction. It is now considered as a renowned heritage site, Somerset’s number 1 tourist destination, and the worlds most haunted prison.
Shepton Mallet Prison provides visitors an authentic prison experience, led by ex-prison officers with a wealth of experience and time ‘served’. There are a wide range of tours, activities and events happening at the prison, as well as education visits, team building, private hire, and production usage.

This is a 32 hours per week role, including weekdays, weekends, and occasional evenings.The salary for this role is £17,472.00.
