Reports to: Coordinator of Advising and Student Persistence
Job status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary: The Student Success Specialist (SSS) acts as the direct support liaison for students within their assigned academic unit, including working with a population of at-risk students, academically advising first-year students, and participating in recruiting events. The SSS will develop and maintain a relationship with the Dean of their assigned academic college and invest in the extracurricular activities of that college.
Job Responsibilities:
- Performs interventions, tracks, and creates maps to success for academically at-risk students
- Collects data on at-risk students and offer support services
- Academically advises all first-year students within their academic unit and partners with faculty to improve advising processes for all students within that unit
- Builds awareness of university-based services (e.g. advising, career services, campus recreation, student organizations, tutoring) to promote holistic student development
- Promotes and engages with career fairs and career development for specific academic unit
- Secondary report to Dean of assigned unit (supplemental annual evaluation)
- Assists the Dean (or designate) of assigned college in developing and implementing retention and early intervention programs for students
- Participates in recruiting events for college, possibly including coordinating outreach activities with high schools and meeting with potential students and parents
- Assists the Dean (or designate) in developing a summer enrichment program for students transitioning from high school to university (may not apply to all Colleges), included in Summer Launch or separate from it
- Participates and leads in planning and implementation of Summer Launch program, including active involvement during the week of the program
- Oversees web site material for college undergraduate programs (with permission from Dean of college)
- Facilitates collection of assessment data related to recruitment and retention
- Represents at Pre-Registration and GO events
- Aids in social, academic, and spiritual integration to support student engagement and success
- Contributes to students’ discipleship and spiritual growth as key component of student success and development
- Performs other duties as assigned by direct supervisor
Qualifications:
- Commitment to the ministry and mission of Houston Christian University
- Ability and willingness to disciple students and foster spiritual growth
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university (preferably in a field of study within their assigned academic unit)
Expectations:
In addition to the above job responsibilities, some weekends or evenings may be required on a limited basis.
