The Control Room Operator (CRO) / Snr Prod Tech works within the installation main control room to operate all offshore production plant and associated systems in a safe, environmentally sound and efficient manner as directed by the Production Supervisor in order to meet or exceed installation hydrocarbon export targets. The CRO plans, through safe, efficient and effective operation of the installation production, PSD/ESD/F&G systems and processes. Control Room Operator (CRO) role requires a candidate who can work well under pressure, and who adjusts quickly to change. They must be good analytical thinkers, able to gather data, determine and take a course of action after identifying possible consequences. Control room operators (CROs) perform a critical role in running normal operations, infrequent activities such as process shut downs and start-ups, and handling abnormal events and emergencies.


Key Activities

As a Control Room Operator / Snr Prod Tech, your activities will include the following:


  • Monitor and operate all equipment controlled from the CCR including the DCS and Fire & Gas Panel. Detect, identify and react to abnormal conditions that may develop into emergency situations.
  • Follow company production equipment operating procedures, in particular Normal and Emergency Operating Procedures
  • Identify and take early proactive action in detecting plant upsets to maintain plant operations and take remedial action where necessary to prevent escalation and/or bring to attention of supervisor
  • Monitoring external/remote radio communications, including Marine ops within installation 500m zone, CSE and overside scopes
  • Communicating with field operations technicians and supervision to direct or agree plant operations to meet production targets within safe, environmentally controlled conditions
  • Monitor and report on production (fiscal) and process parameters including all emissions to the environment – permitted and excursions
  • Monitor the operation of Alarm Systems and respond as required to Process, Fire and Gas alarms
  • Safe and efficient shutdown of topsides process plant, start-up/re-start of production
  • Be able to control the production process and prepare equipment for normal operation and maintenance
  • Identify where SIMOPS situations may arise from conflicting worksites, isolations and permits
  • Working day or night shift ensuring detailed and comprehensive written and verbal handovers are conducted at the end of each shift and at crew change.
  • Provides technical input and knowledge to plans and preparation for major projects, including TAR/Shutdowns, upgrades
  • Variances in production plant performance from desired condition and effectively address each situation and/or bring to attention of supervisor
  • Management of any emergency, in accordance with installation Emergency Response Procedures and is a full member of the Emergency Response team
  • Monitor and operate all equipment assigned to Snr Prod Technician including routine watch-keeping and monitoring of plant conditions
  • Understand specific risks when isolating or breaching integrity of offshore production equipment, e.g. stored energy, asbestos, LSA, Benzyne, etc
  • Operate plant within standard plant operating procedures and identify opportunities for improving SOP’s to ensure standard working practices across all shifts within Management of Change procedure


Qualifications & Qualifications

  • Mandatory Offshore Certification (BOSIET, MIST, Medical etc)
  • NVQ Level 3 Processing Hydrocarbons/Control Room Operations
  • OPITO Control Room Emergency Response Assessment
  • GMDSS Restricted Operator Certificate (GMDSS ROC)
  • Minimum 3years experience as a Control Room Operator on an offshore production facility
  • Minimum 3years experience as a qualified outside Production Technician
  • Expert knowledge plant operations, engineering, or maintenance practices
  • Expert knowledge of distributed control system - Operate panels and touch screen hardware for DCS and programmable logic controller (PLC)
  • Previous experience and willing to undertake Area/Performing Authority and Isolating Authority duties
  • Sound understanding of Offshore relevant Law and regulations
  • Review, edit, understand P&ID’s drawings & platform safety layout drawings
  • Expert knowledge of MAH’s and the assurance activity for SECE’s which support avoidance of such hazards
  • Knowledge of safe operating parameters of rotating equipment to include Turbines, pumps, compressors and engines
  • Management of any emergency, in accordance with installation Emergency Response Procedures and is a full member of the Emergency Response team
  • Provides technical input and knowledge to plans and preparation for major projects, including TAR/Shutdowns, upgrades, etc
