Job description

HEADLINES

Function: Design

Job title: Creative Designer

Reporting to: Director

Experience required:

Junior: 2 year +

Mid – Senior: 5 years +

Location: Primarily Lincoln with occasional meetings in London. Must be within 30-45 minute commute of Lincoln.

Essence: A versatile creative able to transition business challenges into imaginative ideas.

Summary of available position:

We believe that beautiful things happen when a keen ear connects to meandering thoughts. When space allows ideas to percolate and the imagination to trickle into form.

Convention calls you a designer, but we see you as a creator – a visual expressionist; restless with ideas and a terminable yearning to create what you are thinking.

We could talk about InDesign and style sheets, Pantones, responsiveness, crops and bleed, but they are the least interesting things about the role. Of course you know your way around Adobe, and yes, you could always know more.

But what’s of primary importance is that you have the ability to pair business challenges with beautiful aesthetics, delivered with accuracy and a deep-rooted thought process that produces the most remarkable concepts.

We once advertised for an experienced designer and we ultimately employed an outstanding junior – one of our rising stars – so don’t let experience be a barrier.

About us

We’re a team of consultants, world-class creatives and digital innovators trusted by global clients to inspire remarkable relationships between companies and their people.

As ardent believers in work and life, and the unique experience in between, we practice what we preach by giving our own people the thrill of a high-performance business, without it coming at the expense of them being themselves.

We’re a true team: friends, colleagues, mentors… and mischiefs! We get our kicks from work that makes our clients look good and their people feel great. We also get a buzz from being together – socialising, sharing and growing.

We’ve been carefully curating our team for the future, and we're now in the fortunate position to be recruiting once again.

Salary guide

We’re looking for the right people and are happy to have a fair and open discussion around salary based on experience and job level. As an indication, we’re working to the following ranges:

  • Junior: £20k–£22k
  • Mid – Senior: £24k–£32k

Location

The role is primarily based in our Lincoln office, so we’re looking for people who live within a 30-45 minute daily commute of the centre.

There will also be an expectation to travel into central London for occasional client and team meetings.

Any additional travel expenses incurred outside of travelling in Lincoln will be covered by the company.

Home and flexible working is also available providing that the conditions work for both the candidate and the business. Any such working arrangements are likely to be formalised upon completion of the probationary period.

What’s the role?

An opportunity for a true creator; a life-long jotter, inventor, thinker and visualiser who’ll play a key role in our Creative Excellence function. Accountable to our clients’ requirements, the Visual Designer will articulate business challenges into beautiful visual experiences that stir emotion and motivate action.

A core element of the role is deciphering layered briefs into meaningful design that reflects positively on brands. Design work will come in the form of functional identities, beautiful printed collateral and immersive digital spaces and content.

The Visual Designer will work principally with our Creative Director to manage the end-to-end conception, creation and finessing of design work. This will include involvement in discovery, conceptual development, pure design and amendments.

We encourage direct client interaction as it produces the most accurate creative and builds confidence. As the position grows, the role will become more autonomous, with opportunities to work with clients and present ideas and rationales.

Key responsibilities

  • Operating as a key member of Creative Excellence, ensuring all responsibilities relating to the role are fulfilled
  • Maintaining professional standards of conduct in terms of communication, organisation and fulfilment of obligations
  • Understanding client requirements and transposing them into creative solutions across a range of media
  • Developing concepts that comply with brand standards and/or the essence of the client brief
  • Designing a wide range of visuals including presentations, portals, email content, collateral, internal communications, newsletters, infographics, merchandise, visual identities, social media posts and other communications
  • Demonstrating versatility across a spectrum of design capabilities, from brand conception to trivial text changes
  • Expressing depth of thinking by providing ideas that show critical thought
  • Managing the administrative aspects of project work
  • Maintaining a good knowledge of the latest design trends, techniques and styles and sharing these with the team
  • Attending client presentations to share ideas and collate feedback
  • Immersing in the company culture, demonstrating good team ethics on a social and professional level

Key skills

  • An authentic visual-based mindset
  • A professional demeanour suited to a consultancy environment
  • Exceptional design skills in all aspects of design
  • Proficiency in digital tools including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Powerpoint and working knowledge of supporting softwares across web design, email management and content creation
  • Competent in routine application such as Microsoft Word and Excel as well as Teams, Zoom and other common software subscription services
  • Ability to communicate intelligent ideas and build influence
  • A positive attitude with an enthusiasm to create great work
  • UX or behavioural psychology experience or interest

Preferred experience

  • Intentional and consistent honing of creative abilities (formal education such as a Degree tends to symbolise this, but we understand that this is not always the most suitable route for everyone)
  • More senior applicants are expected to hold at least 2+ years experience within an agency or in-house environment.

Junior applicants must evidence additional experience within design, beyond education, either through passion projects, awards, freelancing and/or an outstanding portfolio. Furthermore, junior applicants must also posses at least 1 year of full-time work experience in an office environment

  • Knowledge of our key markets would be a bonus

Anything else?

Emblaze is built around creativity being at the heart of everything we do. We don’t believe in studios – nor the commoditisation of design skills – where creatives are subservient to project managers and ideas are limited by the demands of assigned workflow. Instead, our environment encourages creatives to be expressive; proactively exploring ideas at depth and engaging in relationships with clients.

We’re a Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 5.30pm business, but we work until our standards are achieved. Sometimes this means more finessing or the digging a bit deeper to help get something important over the line. We’re honest about that and, in return, operate an open environment built on trust, where extra effort is reciprocated through flexibility.

This role suits an autonomous individual who wants to be part of a high performing team. One who thinks broadly and maintains high standards in all aspects of work… all while keeping the banter up!

And finally… what can we offer you?

  • An opportunity to make a difference; playing an influential role in a growing, ambitious creative company that values its people
  • A talented team full of brilliant and celebrated individuals who are empowered by a culture of collaboration, support, excitement and goodwill
  • The platform to flourish under the mentorship of a leading Creative Director
  • An energetic and spontaneous working environment where we combine high performance with social activities
  • The infrastructure to pursue an exciting career at a company that actively progresses while always respecting personal priorities, wants and needs
  • An enviable client list and meaningful work that makes a difference
  • Regular social initiatives, wellbeing activities and enjoyable working conditions
  • 25 days holiday, plus bank holidays
  • A competitive salary
  • Flexible working opportunities
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Pension contributions
  • Perks at Work – exclusive discounts and rewards at over 33,000 brands

We are looking for candidates who show alignment with this criteria, who can demonstrate that they’ve actively taken an interest in our business activities.

If you think you are suitable for this role and would like to apply, please apply with your CV and a covering note outlining your suitability for the role, and link to an up to date PDF or online portfolio that demonstrates relevant work and how you think you might add value to the business.
