Dstl's Counter Terrorism and Security Division's Information and Knowledge Management capability are looking for a Software Engineer to join the team. You will study apprenticeship standard ST0119 Digital and Technology Solutions Professional (integrated degree) on the Software Engineer pathway at the University of Winchester.
The Information and Knowledge Management (IKM) capability provides rapid development of operational-based information and knowledge solutions for the Exploitation and Biometrics Group (EBG). The primary responsibility of the post-holder will be supporting IKM in the design, creation, delivery and maintenance of bespoke in-house developed software across all aspects of the Group’s work including enhancing existing applications and processes. Job description
In this role you will support and assist the Information and Knowledge Management Technical Lead to:
- Engage with IKM / software users to understand their requirements.
- Work with other IKM software engineers to develop software and perform user acceptance testing (UAT).
- Maintain and champion a culture of information security.
You will:
- Build your knowledge and experience through involvement in the production and support of a wide range of bespoke software solutions to address IKM challenges across the group.
- Gain a BSc (Hons) qualification in Digital and Technology Solutions following successful completion of the apprenticeship.
Person specification
We are looking for someone who has:
- An understanding or interest in all aspects of the software life cycle from requirements capture through to delivery.
- An interest in software engineering including designing and implementing database solutions
- Knowledge or interest in information management, handling and retrieval
- Practical knowledge of MS Office applications
Important Information
This role start September 2023. You must be 18 to work at Dstl, therefore you must turn 18 before September 2023 to apply for the apprenticeship.

This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the past 5 years. For some roles Developed Vetting will also be required, in this case you should have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.
Qualifications
Other equivalents could include experience gained through industrial apprenticeship schemes, BTEC or NVQ Level 3 in a STEM related subject or experience in military service or in wider industry.
Five Grade 9 - 5 (A* - C) GCSE’s or equivalent, including English and Maths
