Job Opportunity:
Provide the business with technical data, analysis and solutions that will ensure the cost-effective design and purchasing of materials used in the production of Caterpillar products throughout its lifecycle. This will be achieved through the development of detailed component cost models for both NPI and Current Product programs. Cost models coupled with your expert guidance and knowledge will be used to identify cost reduction opportunities for delivery through the CoE, Purchase, NPI or Engineering teams. These will be delivered through negotiation, resourcing, or design. Individuals working in this role will be deemed manufacturing, process, and cost experts by other areas of the business and will be called upon to provide ‘cost’ expertise as the norm.
Job Responsibilities and Duties:
Using information taken from technical specifications, CAD models, part samples, component assessment forms (CAF’s), process maps etc detailed Cost models will be created. Models are generated using dedicated software to process data including: - cycle time, machine data, labour rates, commercial data, scrap rates etc. On completion Caterpillar of initial model process, validation may be required at the supplier facility. Components or engine systems modelled will be complex in design or manufacture.
Working with team Leads to ensure material costs in NPI are tracked and reported. Establish Cost targets and tracking lists with program team. Use defined processes and tools to track material costs throughout NPI program Vs agreed targets. Provide periodic progress reports and material cost data to Finance and product teams.
Report assigned component & system costs Vs target throughout the NPI cycle and lead recovery actions.
Become the expert in the use of dedicated Cost Modelling software including responsibility for some advanced administrative duties.
Creation of GAP analysis (Should Cost Vs Quote) reports and review with commercial team in advance of negotiation. Provide expert technical support during supplier discussion and negotiation.
Initiate the identification of component cost reductions and organise any actions required to deliver the opportunity. Provide support to engineering team to influence the design of a cost-effective technical solution during NPI and general design.
Support purchase in the assessment of price changes to ensure accuracy and validity through Cost models and negotiation.
Initiate and deliver complex departmental continuous improvement projects.
Lead the ‘Tear down’ and evaluation of competitor engines Vs CAT product. Draw clear conclusions from evaluation and report findings to the business.
Development of excellent working relationships, teamwork and project management across departmental boundaries (engineering, purchase, logistics, product management etc) is essential to ensure effective collaboration and saving delivery.

Skills and Experience:
Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:
Degree educated and/or relevant job-related experience
Manufacturing processes with the ability to research and learn new manufacturing methods for use in Cost Models
Analysing and interpreting numerical data created from complex cost models and reaching sound judgements and recommendations
Excellent interpersonal skills required to deal with sensitive issues, develop others, or persuade others inside and outside the department to take specific actions
Excellent understanding of commercial cost drivers
Supplier negotiation
