Job description

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
Corporate Risk Specialist
Location: Hybrid/Flexible Location within Scotland
It’s not every job where you can make a difference for the people of Scotland. But it’s what’s behind every job here. The work we do keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from source to tap and from sink to sea.
Our activities span the length and breadth of Scotland. From operating water and wastewater treatment works, managing the complex networks of pipes and sewers, to undertaking strategy, planning and investment decisions and working with our customers and communities, our regulators and supply chain partners to protect and enhance our services.
Risk is inherent in everything that we do. Effective risk management is key to ensuring the continuity and resilience of our service to our customers, as well as driving us toward our three key ambitions as set out within the Water Sector Vision:
  • Service excellence; adapting to a changing climate, dealing with our ageing assets and meeting our customers’ evolving expectations.
  • Beyond net zero emissions; showing leadership in mitigating climate change and enhancing Scotland’s natural environment.
  • Great value and financial sustainability; customers will receive great value, now and in the future, and we will be financially sustainable
Within the Corporate Risk Team we focus on the biggest risks (both threats and opportunities) to Scottish Water. Those risks which could significantly impact the services we provide to our customers, our strategic direction, our finances and our people.
Working within the Corporate Risk Team no two days will be the same. We work in a complex, dynamic and ever developing environment, striving to understand the risks we encounter today and how effectively we are managing them. We are however also actively considering the threats and opportunities we could face in the future; supporting the identification and understanding of forecasts, trends and patterns, internally and externally, and challenging the business on the best approach to navigating these.
What you’ll do
As a Corporate Risk Specialist you will lead a risk specialism within the business, this may include Corporate Risk Reporting; Mitigation & Assurance Assessment; Risk Appetite Development & Embedment; and/or, Horizon Scanning.
You will be the key contact for nominated business areas, enabling and supporting risk management activities in those areas. You will build an effective relationships and networks base on trust and transparency. You will ensure understanding of key business processes and activities and develop awareness of individual, aggregated and compounding risk across the business.
Across these activities you will be responsible for providing specialist knowledge, expertise and challenge to our people, our decision-makers and our Senior Leaders.
You will be a champion for a positive and an effective risk culture. You will promote understanding and awareness of risk and risk management across the organisation; in doing so you will enable our people to be competent at effectively identifying, assessing and managing risks. You will lead the design, development, embedment of systems and processes within the corporate and enterprise risk management framework.
You will be the corporate conscious - considering how effectively we are managing risk, challenging where we can improve our activities or approaches, and providing appropriate assurance to key business and governance groups.
The role will report to the Head of Corporate Risk and inform key governance groups including the Executive Leadership Team, Audit & Risk Committee and Board. The role will work alongside existing Corporate Risk Specialists and will matrix manage a small team of Risk Advisors and Analysts.
What you’ll bring
You will ideally be educated to degree level and hold a suitable qualification in a risk related discipline. More importantly however you will be able to demonstrate a risk management mindset; you will be able to evidence practical application of risk management and provide extensive knowledge and experience in a risk-based role.
You will be an experienced and enthusiastic people leader, with a track record of supporting, coaching and developing people from different backgrounds and alternative outlooks, with the commitment to maintain a fun and supportive working environment.
A skilled communicator, you’ll have a knack for knowing-your-audience. Whether you’re crafting written documentation, presenting to a group or facilitating a risk workshop; you know how to effectively get your message across or achieve a desired outcome.
You will be a fast learner and able to switch between technical subjects with relative ease. Where required you can deep-dive into detail, but also able to zoom out and see the bigger picture. You will be able to translate complexity into accessible language and ensure clear understanding of what is important.
In all your dealings with colleagues, customers and external parties, you’ll embody the Scottish Water Character – by being Bold, Responsible, Inspiring and Caring, both as a colleague and as a Leader.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This role will occasionally require you to work outside of normal working hours. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our defined benefit pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), and generous life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
Salary Scale: £45,873.- £58,418
