By joining us as a Level 4 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Practitioner Apprentice, you’ll help make change a reality across Network Rail and will be contributing towards looking after the environment, communities, and colleagues design, build and operate a railway in a sustainable manner, delivering a final asset that provides more frequent, faster, greener trains, running on a better, cleaner, and more reliable railway. All of which is fit for the future and delivering ongoing sustainability benefits for decades to come.
You’ll be mentored and guided by the TRU Sustainability team who will empower you to grow and develop through a blend of study and on-the-job learning.
Main ResponsibilitiesWhat you’ll be doing
The Transpennine Route Upgrade’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability team focus on four areas:
Northern jobs
We are here to help the North prosper. Faster, more frequent services can deliver better connectivity and fuel regional job creation. We will also work with local businesses of all sizes to deliver a legacy of economic growth in the region.
The construction and operation of TRU will create a wealth of employment and businesses opportunities along the Transpennine corridor – encouraging new entrants into the rail industry through work experience and apprenticeships. While also ensuring our team reflect the rich diversity of the communities we serve.
Enhanced environment
We take our environmental impact seriously. We will act as a custodian for the natural environment through design, delivery, and operation to deliver a fully electrified route, removing diesel- only trains which will reduce our carbon and air quality impacts.
We will also reduce carbon from the infrastructure, adopt circular economy principals and support sustainable sourcing. Minimising pollution while looking at renewable energy and biodiversity opportunities on – or near – the line every step along the way.
Satisfied customers
The customer always comes first. We will deliver more frequent trains on a more resilient railway that is fit for current weather conditions and future climate change. Providing safe, reliable and accessible travel for both freight and passengers to ensure the railway that can be used and enjoyed by all.

We are committed to our communities. We will keep our communities safe, minimise disruption and invest in wellbeing, education and community spaces to leave a net positive impact on society.
In this scheme you will have the opportunity to work as part of a broad and collaborative team across various parts of our innovative sustainability approach, giving you the chance to widen your skillset and excel in your field. The apprenticeship, along with on-the-job learning at Network Rail will give you varied knowledge of corporate responsibility and sustainability practice. Once you complete the Level 4 qualification, you can use your knowledge to become a fully skilled professional with transferable skills.
The course is very broad and covers the principles of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability including managing projects, managing budget and understanding environmental, societal and regulatory agendas. As you progress towards the End Point Assessment for the qualification, you will choose a project which allows you to specialise in an area of interest.
What you’ll get out of it
You will achieve a Level 4 qualification in Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability. You will also qualify for free membership of the Institute for Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability.

Drugs & Alcohol test: All prospective candidates offered a conditional role will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5-year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced

Contract type: Permanent
The entry requirements: Applicants will need 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4/C or above including English and Maths.

Salary: You will receive a salary of £20,500 per annum
28 days annual leave + bank holidays
