We have a new opportunity for someone to join our Coroner's Service, supporting our small team providing support to the Senior Coroner. This team ensures that the legislative and case management processes are conducted efficiently and effectively, alongside the planning and handling of inquests. Salary: £35,411 to £38,296 per annum Type: Working Pattern: Full Time (37 hours per week - plus participation in an on-call rota) Location: Based at the Coroner's Office, Woodvale, Lewes Road, Brighton BN2 3QB (Hybrid and Flexible Working) Travel will be within your jurisdiction which will include anywhere in West Sussex, Brighton and Hove. All West Sussex County Council (WSCC) employees have a WSCC location as their ual work location, however we do operate a 'Smarter working' approach, this is something that you agree locally with your manager, for what works best for you, your role and your team. The Opportunity Under the direction of the Coroner, you will be responsible for investigating and recording sudden and unexpected death in line with the Coroner's and Justice Act 2009, Coroner's (Investigations) Regulations 2013, Coroner's (Inquests) Rules 2013 and the Chief Coroner's Guidance. You will be responsible for investigating and recording sudden and unexpected death, attending the scene, liaising with the investigation team and providing expert advice in the field. You will use your communication and interpersonal skills to work with varies parties from others in the coroner's service to bereaved families, able to progress investigations and provide the appropriate support. In the role you will have a number of 'designated powers' which you will be required to discharge professionally, legally and proportionately. You will be attending scenes of sudden death which can have the potential for accessing challenging terrains and in potentially inclement weather. About You You will be able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, communicating on a number of different levels with multiple stakeholders and adapting your style accordingly. You will be capable of absolute discretion in handling matters of a personal, sensitive and confidential nature. You will need to be able to manage your own workload, working flexibly, multi-tasking and balancing different priorities effectively to meet the needs of the bereaved, HM Coroners and partner agencies. You'll be comfortable making fast-time decisions when managing unpredictable caseloads and setting priorities. You will need to be able to participate in an on-call rota, acting as a single point of contact for any out of hours enquiries and attending scenes on behalf of the Coroner. You will need to be able to travel independently to various locations around the county. You will be required to undertake annual training delivered by the Ministry of Justice.
