Mathematical Reviews (MR), founded in 1940, is a division of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. MR serves researchers and scholars by providing, via MathSciNet, detailed and timely information about peer-reviewed articles and books in the mathematical sciences. MR’s mission is to develop and maintain the MR database, from which MathSciNet is produced.

The American Mathematical Society, founded in 1888, is a non-profit membership organization that is dedicated to advancing research and connecting the diverse global mathematical community through our publications, meetings and conferences, MathSciNet, professional services, advocacy, and awareness programs. The AMS has over 30,000 members worldwide and offices in Rhode Island, Michigan, and Washington, DC

SUMMARY: The Copy Editor provides first-line editorial, technical and referencing support to mathematical editors in the preparation of reviews published in MathSciNet.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Edit mathematical manuscripts using a math typesetting markup system (TeX), ensuring accuracy, readability, proper English grammar, idiomatic usage, clarity and consistency of mathematical notation and formulas, and conformity to house style rules
  • Verify and properly format all references to previous scholarship using the MR database and other resources
  • Proofread bibliographic data for items being added to the MR database
  • Perform quality control on "ready-to-publish" reviews

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Preference given to applicants with editorial coursework or experience and/or advanced study in English; digital typesetting, coding, and/or mark-up languages; foreign languages; library science; and/or mathematics or other sciences.
  • Superior editorial and grammatical skills, as demonstrated by performance on an editing test.
  • Solid written communication skills, as evidenced in writing samples.
  • Comprehensive computer skills, especially including database searching and editing within an electronic environment.
