Job description
Contract type: Fixed term for 12 months
Hours: Full-time
About the role
We are looking for a Senior Biobank Coordinator to work across two of our departmental (Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences) bio-bank teams. Supporting the biobanks will require you to work both at the Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals with regular trips between the two local sites.
This role of Senior Bio-bank Coordinator will require an equal amount of support for the OTB (Oxford Transplant Biobank)/QUOD (QUality in Organ Donation) and the QUANTUM (QUAlity biobanking iNvesTigating Urological Malignancies) biobanks. Whilst there will be many requirements of the role which are mutual to both OTB/QUOD and QUANTUM, there will be aspects of the role which are entirely independent to each, requiring the post holder to display excellent organisational and communication skills to manage and balance the responsibilities and duties required for both biobanks equally and effectively.
The main duties of the post are focused on providing the complete range of end to end services to support research bio-banking for both the OTB/QUOD and QUANTUM bio-banks. In summary this will include (but not be limited to); patient recruitment and identification, seeking informed consent, sample acquisition, transfer and transport of specimens, sample processing (including some histology and molecular biology), archiving and data entry of samples and sample despatch/shipping. There will also be the requirement to supervise a team of technicians to facilitate out of hours collections for OTB and research organ acceptance for QUOD, and the requirement to work flexible / out of office hours on occasions for QUANTUM.
All of those duties must be delivered in a way which is quality driven, this will require the individual to provide continual support and development of the bio-bank Quality Management Systems (QMS) to ensure that they are compliant with the regulatory standards set out by the Human Tissue Act (HTA).
About you
This post requires you be educated to degree level, in a relevant subject (preferably biological or bio-medical science), whilst also being able to demonstrate solid experience of working in a research bio-bank and/or clinical or research laboratory.
The role will be both busy and demanding requiring somebody who is dynamic, pays attention to detail and who organises and keeps excellent records. The post holder will need to forge good working relationships and rapport with a wide range of clinical, research and administrative staff to be successful in this role, making confidence and communication skills an important asset for applicants.
This full-time post is available immediately and is fixed-term for 12 months in the first instance. We would be willing to consider applications for part-time hours.
