Job Description – Non-Emergency Medical Appointment On-Call Driver
The non-emergency medical appointment driver is key to the fundamental values of Jacob’s Heart and the service to families who have a child with cancer and all the challenges they are facing.
Who we are:
Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services exists to improve the quality of life for children with cancer and support their families in the challenges they face. We provide family-centered care that addresses the emotional, practical, and financial struggles of families of children and teens in treatment for cancer. We envision a community where every child with a cancer diagnosis has a strong, supported and informed family that is able to participate fully in their care. We strive to inspire compassionate action within local communities to create a safety net of support for the unique needs of each child and family.
Essential Functions
- Provides safe and reliable transportation to a child and their family member(s) to their medical appointments in a Jacob’s Heart vehicle.
- Ensures that the family’s needs are met while providing the transportation (purchase meals, stops for a restroom break, or other needs that may arise)
- Reports vehicle concerns and or incidents to the Transportation Manager in a timely manner.
- Adheres to all agency and state driver regulations.
- Submits invoices within the agreed timeline.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Compassionate and comfortable working with children who have cancer, their siblings, parents, and extended family.
Minimum Qualifications / Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Over 21 years of age
- Bilingual in Spanish - preferred
- Ability to pass a background check
- Valid CA driver’s license and clean DMV recordLess than 4 points on your driving record
DUI: no exceptions Unless expunged or removed from current record
- Attend a mandatory training at Jacob’s Heart Watsonville location
- CPR/First Aid Adult-Pediatric Certification Preferred (if not provided)
Covid-19 Considerations
- Currently, we require all contractors who interact with families to show proof of vaccination against Covid-19
Job Type: 1099 - Contractual
- Drivers are hired as independent contractors. An independent contractor is not an employee. Contractor therefore will not (1) receive any employee benefits such as paid holidays, vacations, sick leave or other such paid time off, or (2) participate in Jacob’s Heart sponsored health or other employee benefit plans.
- Jacob’s Heart will not withhold taxes of any kind or in any form for their independent contractors. Payment of taxes is the exclusive responsibility of the contractor.
- Please also note that after separation from Jacob’s Heart for any reason, independent contractors are not eligible for unemployment benefits with the state of California.
Description
Each driver will be a member of our pool. As a driver, you will be notified of rides and have the opportunity to select the rides that work with your availability. Rides are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Drivers are not entitled to a certain number of hours per week.
Typical Rides are to Lucile Packard or UCSF with possible options to other hospitals or clinics within our service area and surrounding communities.
Ride example: 1. Pick up a Jacob’s Heart vehicle at our Watsonville location 2. Drive time to family’s home 3. Drive time to appointment 4. Wait time while the family is in appointment 5. Return time to family home 6. Return of vehicle to Jacob’s Heart Watsonville offices. Rides range in total time from 2 hours to 10 hours.
Compensation
- Hourly starting at $21 depending on medical certificates (CPR/First Aid BLS EMT)
- Meal stipend
- Monetary incentive for rides given prior to 7 am and post 7 pm
- Contractor must submit a W-9
