Job description
We are looking for an experienced content writer who can take on creative briefs and produce content for World Coffee Portal – the leading information platform for the global coffee industry. The right candidate needs to be creative with a strong attention to detail and a proactive attitude that is passionate about content.
This a fully remote fixed-term role for 10 working days.
What does the day-to-day of this role look like?
You will source and write four 250-400-word B2B news stories covering the global coffee industry every weekday. These will feed into our two newsletters – The Weekly Coffee Dose (Thursday), The Weekly Coffee Dose Extra Shot – (Saturday). The first story of the day needs to be submitted by 9am and you will:
- Provide commentary on the market dynamics, consumer trends and economic forces behind the story, utilising data from World Coffee Portal’s global coffee shop research.
- Re-write press releases, utilise social media and contacts within the coffee/hospitality industry to produce news content. This must be global in scope – a maximum of two UK news stories per day.
- Source an appropriate image and relevant quote to accompany the story. Articles must contain a headline, standfirst, body copy and licenced/supplied image with caption/credit.
Topic examples:
New international market entries; senior appointments; financial results; significant business targets; sustainability; new store formats; major closures; mergers & acquisitions.
Types of brands to cover:
Major branded coffee chains; boutique café groups; drive-thru coffee; espresso machine manufacturers; coffee roasters; retail packaged coffee brands; travel hub coffee shops/operators; coffee vending/self-serve.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
This is a great opportunity for an experienced Content Writer to work for a fast-paced newsroom covering a range of international news topics from across the global coffee industry. You will have the freedom to research and write about relevant topics within the industry, producing informative and well-researched breaking news.
What will success look like for the candidate in this role?
You will produce well-written and researched news stories covering a wide range of international markets and industry segments – e.g., branded coffee chains, coffee roasters, espresso machine manufacturers, retail packaged coffee brands, drive-thru coffee operators, travel hub, and coffee chains. The successful candidate may also be commissioned to write longer-form features and interviews for World Coffee Portal and 5THWAVE magazine.
What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?
The successful candidate will be a self-starter, possess immaculate writing skills, error-free reporting, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to analyse the context behind the headlines. You will need to have a knowledge of the coffee industry and business terminology.
What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?
You will need to work to strict deadlines, successfully sourcing and writing four relevant news per day, with the first story submitted before 9am. The content must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Articles must be accurate, punchy, and thoroughly researched to expand upon the source material.
- Press releases can form the basis of a story, but they must be fully re-worked and expanded upon.
- Understand and accurately convey the relationship between parent companies and subsidiaries, franchisees, etc.
- Crafting news stories from complex financial results statements.
- Understand the story behind the marketing hype.
