HMRC Shared Services specialises in providing high quality HR, finance, and procurement services to over 65,000 employees of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), Valuation Office Agency (VOA) and Revenue and Customs Digital Technology Services (RCDTS).
We have ambitious and exciting plans to transform HR services with simpler processes and intuitive digital systems. We are seeking a Content Designer to join the Research and Design team, to help us achieve our plans and enable our colleagues to have a straightforward and effortless experience when running their working lives.

Job description
As a Content Designer within our Research and Design team you will have responsibility for making HR guidance simpler and clearer. You will need to be able to produce and maintain clear and meaningful content with a strong focus on user needs.
This is a role rich in opportunity and challenge for people passionate about improving the employee experience in HMRC and how we deliver HR as a digital service. You’ll join a multi-disciplined team at a time of considerable and exciting transformational change.

We are looking for someone who will:
- Be responsible for content quality and will work as a team to build the best possible content for the user
- Ensure content is shown to users in the right place, in the best possible format, and on the right platform
- Make sure that the content quality is of the highest standards and accessible for all users
- Work closely with user centred design professionals to build and develop the best products for our users
- Be comfortable using evidence, data, and research to advise your content
- Build long-lasting relationships and partnerships across the organisation to focus on the needs of the users
- Use GOV.UK style guides and advise on best practice design patterns
Person specification
In this dynamic and sometimes ambiguous environment you will:
- Use previous design experience to create user-centred content that is clear, concise, and meaningful
- Be able to write and edit using a style guide and plain English
- Be able to explain content design decisions in a way that stakeholders and the team can understand
- Be comfortable reflecting on feedback and constructively reviewing the work of others, adapting to changing priorities and workloads as and when needed
Essential criteria
- Ability to identify and write user needs, working autonomously
- You will have the experience creating effective content for a range of channels via different communications
- An understanding of GOV.UK standards
- Proven experience working on several different content delivery projects simultaneously whilst adapting, reflecting and being resilient to change
- Ability to confidently demonstrate your work, showing the value of prototyping
- Demonstrable experience of using content management systems

- Experience of user research.
- An awareness of how to analyse pain points within services and communicating and sharing design solutions

Selection process details

We will ask candidates at interview to undertake a design exercise, where they will be presented with a piece of content and asked how they would make improvements, including:
- Overall thoughts on the content
- What the key user need for this content is
- Content that they would remove
- Content that they would make more prominent
- Any content they would rewrite
At interview we will be assessing experience, behaviours, and technical skills. As part of the interview, we will ask you to complete a short content design task.
