Job description
Job Number: TML032
Job Location: Leatherhead, Surrey, UK
Grade/Salary Band: Competitive depending on experience and previous achievements
Background
NEC Corporation (“NEC”) is a leading global manufacturer and service provider of telecommunication, computer and electronic devices, which brings together and integrates technology and expertise to create the ICT-enabled society of tomorrow. NEC Telecom MODUS Ltd is a UK based subsidiary of NEC.
NEC Telecom MODUS Ltd. is developing base station technology to be used in 5G mobile telecommunications systems based on the requirements of mobile operators to support super high speed mobile data, ultra-reliable low-latency communications and massive numbers of IoT devices.
We have been developing mobile wireless technology for over 20 years and our results have found their way into many operators’ networks in Japan and around the world. Our technical teams have a wealth of mobile network knowledge and experience, and NEC Telecom MODUS staff members represent NEC on international standards bodies and industry forums.
Role:
A vacancy has arisen to work on Radio Resource Management (RRM) & Optimisation (e.g. SON, O-RAN RIC) algorithm design and performance evaluation for NEC’s current and future O-RAN 5G products. The role will involve combining original thinking with the latest internal and external research and techniques in telecoms, computing, mathematics and related sciences (e.g. AI/ML).
Main Duties:
The main duties will be:
Contribute to the creation and evaluation of NEC’s RRM, Network Optimisation technology by:
- Providing initiative in proposing new relevant areas of investigation that would add-value to the current and future products
- Contributing to the algorithm design and performance evaluation of new RRM & Network Optimisation features
- Designing and implementing simulations in C++, MATLAB and Python
- Running simulations and analysing results
- i.e. extract useful information from raw data, spot anomalies and construct testable hypotheses to explain them.
- Producing technical reports on RRM & Network Optimisation algorithms and system performance relating to future 3GPP features and any related architecture changes
- Providing input to RRM & Network Optimisation feature systems analysis and design
The successful candidate must have:
- Knowledge and practice of problem solving with AI/ML principles and key techniques (e.g. deep learning, reinforcement learning, etc.) and using AI/ML tools (e.g. TensorFlow, Keras)
- Knowledge of mobile communications systems
- C++, Matlab and Python programming skills.
- Analytical and mathematical skills (e.g. matrix algebra, simple calculus), and in particular probability and statistics
- Experience in RRM and/or network optimisation (SON) algorithm design (e.g. handover, admission control, power control, Load Balancing, Handover Optimisation, etc.)
- Ability to undertake system level simulation of a mobile radio network e.g.:
- knowledge of methods to model radio propagation, packet data traffic patterns, layer 1 and layer 2 network behaviour) and
- ability to judge an appropriate level of detail to which the system needs to be modelled to answer the question at hand.
- Familiarity with virtualisation techniques for real-time systems
- Practical experience of virtualisation tools (e.g. Docker/Kubernetes)
- Link level simulation experience
- Familiarity with Call Processing and Real Time concepts
The ideal candidates will be a motivated, collaborative team player, able to work pro-actively and with integrity and ability to maintain consistency under pressure. You will need an ability to abstract ideas and innovate solutions to complex problems as well as effective oral and written communication skills in English.
It will be necessary to build relationships with NEC’s technical teams around the world and work well with the local NEC Telecom MODUS team.
Work is done within a QA system where we continually look for ways to improve quality and efficiency.
Qualifications:
Minimum of an Honours degree in Communications, Electronics, Physics, Computing or Maths. Ideally a completed PhD involving research into mobile networks
To Apply:
