Job description
This appointment is to support the expansion of the existing clinical team based at Ipswich Hospital. The successful candidate will join the two current Gynaecological oncologists Mr Barnaby Rufford and Miss Wendy MacNab
The standard full time job plan will consist of 10 programmed activities of which up to 1.5 will typically be SPAs. The Trust will allocate 1.5 SPAs for appraisals, CPD, mandatory training, job planning etc. Further SPA time may be allocated for specified activities. This has to be agreed with the clinical director at initial job planning review. Permission from your Clinical Director/Medical Director must be sought for participation in external NHS activities and once agreed these should be recorded in your job plan. There is an on call element of 0.5pa.
The candidate will be expected to be an active member of the gynaecological oncology team based both in clinic, the ward and operating theatres. In particular the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the equal provision of laparoscopic and robotic surgery in gynaecological oncology as well as supra-radical surgical treatment of gynaecological cancer. Participation in the Obstetric and Gynaecology rota (alongside an Obstetric “buddy”) is expected. Evidence of significant experience in advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques and supra-radical surgery in gynaecological oncology would be highly desirable. The post will have 10 programmed activities (PAs).
ESNEFT is part of the Mid Anglia Cancer Network. The cancer network provides gynaecological oncology services for over 1.15m population. The centre takes gynaecological oncology cases from Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford and Colchester Hospital.
Ipswich hospital has a dedicated robotic surgery suite which Gynaecology Oncology have dedicated access to.
The cancer centre is supported by an excellent HDU/ITU service as well as support from other on site specialties such colorectal surgery, urological surgery, vascular surgery and interventional radiology. Plastic surgery is provided when required by Broomfield Hospital. A close working relationship has been developed with urological and colorectal colleagues, it is expected that the successful candidate will engage in this multi-disciplinary approach to care.
The centre had 1660 gynaecological cancer referrals last year including approximately 32 recurrences.
All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme.
- Clinical Leadership and administrative responsibility for the proper functioning of the Gynaecological Oncology Centre
- Develop standards, procedures and robust systems in the department to ensure safe, high quality and efficient patient care from the point of entry into the department to admission or discharge from the department
- Supervision of the junior medical staff in the Unit who will have opportunity to learn on a one to one basis on both formal and informal rounds and also on ad hoc basis throughout the day
- Risk Management activity to ensure the safe and quality care of women and their families
- An active part in educational programmes for junior medical staff, including formal teaching sessions and clinical audits relevant to the needs of the Unit
- To teach and train staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate
- Maintain an up to date job plan and personal development plan
- Register and participate in the appropriate CPD scheme with the RCOG
- Issuing of advice to GPs on suitability of patients for admission to hospital
