Job description
We are looking for enthusiastic consultants to join our Diabetes & Endocrinology team at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, a high performing organisation which was rated Outstanding by the CQC in its most recent inspection.
The service is widespread geographically, covering from North Tyneside, across to Hexham in the west and up to Berwick in the north. This presents unique challenges for the service but provides opportunities for a locality working model that allows our teams to build strong relationships in their area to ensure patients are receiving the best care possible, across the patch.
We are an enthusiastic team, motivated to develop and model the delivery of our services around the intricacies of the region. This is a great opportunity for those who have worked within other Diabetes & Endocrinology units as well as those moving into their first consultant post. We are committed to ensuring our team members have a good work life balance and will be flexible with regards to any job plans, considering full-time and part-time hours.
The service has a distinct focus on medical education, hosting students from both Newcastle and Sunderland medical schools. The service would be very willing to support any candidate in this field; one of our current consultants is the regional Training Programme Director.
The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities (PAs) with elective outpatient work and inpatient care in Acute Medicine. These duties will be shared with the five other consultants currently within the service, as well as sharing the inpatient work with the rest of the Acute Medicine team (rota of around 1 in 8).
The successful candidates will provide skills in Diabetes & Endocrinology but will be encouraged to develop additional specific expertise of their choosing e.g. diabetic foot, antenatal, type 1 diabetes, lipid services. This work will involve linking closely with our multi-disciplinary team, comprising of Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Endocrine Specialist Nurses, Diabetes Specialist Podiatrists, Diabetes Dietitians and Psychologists, amongst others. There are also some areas of the service which involve close working with colleagues at other NHS organisations.
They will also contribute towards supervision of trainees and medical students within the specialist service.
Please refer to the attached job description for further details.
We manage three major locality hospitals at North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexham, plus a number of smaller community hospitals and clinics from Tynemouth to Berwick on Tweed, in addition to our state-of-the-art Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, the first of its kind in England. We also care for people in their homes and provide services from facilities in local communities such as health centres. We give people greater choice and control over their care to help them to live independently at home and avoid hospital admission where appropriate. High quality patient care is at the heart of everything we do and we strive to ensure every single patient and service user has an exceptional experience with us. We have one of the most extensive patient experience programmes of any trust in England and we use this as a foundation for building our services.
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to expand our Diabetes & Endocrinology consultant team. The successful candidate will be based at either North Tyneside General Hospital or Wansbeck General Hospital, although there will be an element of travel to provide clinics at our other sites and contribute to the Acute Medicine rota at Cramlington.
The post holders’ primary roles will be to strengthen locality-based service delivery of Diabetes & Endocrinology services. The appointees will join a Trustwide team of 5 consultant physicians and will work alongside medical trainees as well as the wider multi-disciplinary team.
Any successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their skills in more specific areas of the service, especially as we look to grow areas such as our Technology service and our Diabetic Foot team. They will be expected to be an active contributor to service developments within the team as well as contributing to teaching and research where applicable.
The post will also provide a weekday session of acute general medicine at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital and be expected to take part in the Acute Medicine on call rota (currently 1 in 8 weekends).
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is an outstanding Trust and this is an opportunity to join an organisation in which clinicians are fully involved at the forefront of managing and developing services. A full description of the structure of the medical directorate and the Diabetes & Endocrinology service is enclosed within.
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is committed to supporting all employees to achieve a work-life balance, regardless of their personal circumstances. Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues.
