The Anaesthetic Department at the Kent & Canterbury Hospital is looking to recruit dynamic and forward-thinking individuals to join our team of dedicated clinicians. Our hospital undertakes all vascular surgery for East Kent, urological (including major cancer and robotic surgery) and elective orthopaedic surgery. A range of day surgical specialties are also represented, including: dental and maxillofacial surgery, ENT, general surgery (including paediatrics), ophthalmology, Interventional Radiology, MRI and endoscopy. Emergency theatre cover is provided daily. Regional anaesthesia plays a major part in our service and we support sustainable anaesthetic principles.
Anaesthetic services are provided for elective and emergency surgery in the main operating theatre complex of 5 theatres. In addition, there are 2 day-surgery theatres, 2 endovascular theatres, 1 ophthalmic theatre and a new 4 theatre Elective orthopaedic unit. Anaesthetic services also support the MRI suite, endoscopy unit and intravenous line insertions.
As a consultant it will be of great opportunity to practice both upper and lower limb ultra sound guided regional anaesthesia and we are in a process to deliver day case major arthroplasty with the use of newer regional block techniques. There is an opportunity to become involved in the preassessment service. The post holder may be involved in the education of medical students, junior doctors and other clinical staff within theatres.

Job plans within the anaesthetic department are flexible. With this 10 PA position, there is 1 PA allocation for SPA, during which there is an expectation for the successful candidate to support appraisal, revalidation and completion of mandatory training.1 additional SPA may be available for additional roles undertaken. It is anticipated that this job plan will include cover for vascular, endovascular, orthopaedic and urology lists however the job plan can be honed to reflect individual skills, knowledge and experience.
Kent and Canterbury Anaesthetic Consultants contribute to a 1:12 non-resident on call rota, supporting the resident registrar grade anaesthetist, covering CEPOD and the specialist ITU. The obstetric services are located in the other hospitals in the trust and job plans can be flexible to include if needed.
