With a turnover of around £700 million, we provide services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, University Hospital Lewisham and a range of community settings in Lewisham. We also provide some services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.

The post holder will work with consultant colleagues, junior doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, clinical managers at Lewisham Haematology, and other members of the Division. Other consultant colleagues, senior management of the hospital, other hospital staff at UHL.

Share with the other Consultant Haematologists in running the Haematology service, both clinical and laboratory.

Consultants, with an interest in Haemato-Oncology (Myeloma & Lymphoma) & General Haematology(including Haemoglobinopathy & Thrombosis)

Take part in on call rota on a 1:5 basis at UHL/LGT. Annual and study leave is covered internally with no locum cover.

Take part in managerial duties in the Department and Trust.

Undergo annual appraisal and timely revalidation.

Undertake CME/CPD as required by the College, and facilitated by funds from the Trust.

Take part in Clinical Governance as a practicing clinician and to seek to maintain clinical and laboratory standards.

Take part in audit using the Trust audit facilities.

Teaching and training of junior doctors, medical students, laboratory and other healthcare professionals.

Provide continuing responsibility for patients in the post holder’s care and, in partnership with colleagues, work towards the optimal functioning of the Department.

The post holder may be required to undertake other duties appropriate for a Consultant Haematologist not otherwise specified.

Our staff culture change programme has been key to the Trust’s improvement journey, as we’ve stabilised our workforce by reducing vacancy rates and improving staff retention. We’ve also significantly increased the representation of minority ethnic leaders across our clinical and corporate teams.

The trust is located in a pleasant part of South East London, with easy access to central London and the Kent countryside. There is a wide range of residential areas with excellent local amenities and schools.

The appointee, together with consultant colleagues, is expected:
1. To participate equally in the provision of clinical and laboratory Haematology services for the Trust.
2. Contribute to delivering Cross Site Thrombosis & Anticoagulation Services & Governance as required.
3. To provide comprehensive Consultant ward attendee cover in rotation and participate on a 1 in 4/5 on-call for all aspects of Haematology with prospective cover for Consultant colleagues leaves, including Out-patient Clinic covers.
4. To provide clinical leadership by: • contributing to speciality developments (Myeloma & Lymphoma)

  • contributing to overall cross-directorate improvements in the service
5. To actively participate in Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Meetings (Myeloma & Lymphoma), Cancer Network meetings and local MDM & PTL meetings.
6. To advise and be available for consultation on clinical matters, both generally and on an individual patient basis, with clinical colleagues in the hospital, general practitioners and Trust staff
7. To be responsible for interpretation of results and advise on appropriate further investigations where necessary and provide Laboratory cover.
8. To participate in the management of the service and work with laboratory staff and General Manager to set clinical priorities and resolve operational problems.
9. To participate in Departmental/Divisional Committee meetings complementary to current Consultants and also Trust Committee meetings as required
10. To guide laboratory staff on clinical aspects of the service; to instruct and work with laboratory staff in the day-to-day handling of cases
11. To provide teaching to technical and medical staff in the Trust and to medical students
12. To undertake Clinical Supervisor role for junior medical staff and Educational Supervisor role for Haematology Specialist Registrars
13. To participate in clinical research including entering patients into NCRI clinical trials and taking on site principal investigator role in relevant specialist interests
14. To participate in clinical audit, accreditation and quality assurance schemes.
15. To undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the Royal College of Pathologists
16. To comply with the requirements of good clinical governance and any new national arrangements for medical recertification
17. To advise the General Manager on clinical matters relating to the service
18. To work with colleagues on setting the strategic clinical direction
19. To advise and discuss with the General Manager changes in methodologies or introduction of new equipment, consumables or new tests
20. To collaborate with clinical colleagues in the development of new methods of treatment and lead in developing Clinical trials jointly between LGT & KCH.
21. To participate in the annual consultant appraisal process in line with Trust policy
