Job description

ON-TRAIN CONDUCTOR

EDINBURGH

ScotRail has played a critical role in keeping people moving during the pandemic, with services helping get key workers and others to where they need to be. There has been significant investment across the network to electrify lines, and on new and upgraded trains. This helped to deliver ScotRail’s highest ever score for customer satisfaction in the most recent National Rail Passenger Survey. With more than 5,000 employees, we are looking for people who are focussed on our customers, to continue delivering the best possible service for people throughout the country.

Twice accredited as a Top Employer and having achieved Investors in Diversity, we value our people and aim to inspire, attract, and keep the best talent and provide our people with a safe place to truly thrive at work.

We are dedicated in helping to close the diversity gap across the rail industry and would love to see more young people, women, people from ethnically diverse backgrounds, LGBT+ employees and the disabled. Supporting diversity and inclusion is a big part of who we are, we are not looking for people to fit into our culture but add to it.

At ScotRail, we proactively embrace diversity across our workforce. To build a more sustainable future, we need the best team- a team with a diverse mix of people and skills, where everyone feels valued and heard and able to thrive. We recognise that we are under-represented in terms of women, young people, the disabled and people from ethnically diverse backgrounds. We’re therefore taking positive steps to promote a positive and inclusive culture; we welcome applications from those that identify with these groups to better represent the communities we serve.

Expect many different challenges as you put the customer first, growing through training that develops your confidence as a person and your long-term security as an employee. Safety in the rail industry is paramount and in the role of conductor you are responsible for the safety of customers on board our trains. You will carry our regular operational checks on train and at intermediate stations, you will also deal with any unexpected and/or emergency situation as they arise.

Conductors patrol the train and are on hand to provide customers with information and support relating to their journey. They will help customers who may need special attention or assistance. They also ensure that all customers have valid travel tickets via full ticket checks and issuing tickets where necessary, handle cash and process payment card transactions. They are responsible for communicating customer safety and journey information via regular public address announcements. This role will involve assisting passengers with disabilities to board and alight trains and could involve the use of a portable ramp which weighs up to 15kg, the portable ramp may be required to be carried the full length of a train.

We are looking for a clear and confident communicator with excellent problem solving and team working skills, coupled with the ability to work well under pressure, and to think on your feet, particularly in disruptive situations.

As an inclusive employer, we want you to bring your “whole self” skills and dedication to ScotRail and we’ll recognise your effort, support your development, and help to drive your ambition. We offer an attractive reference salary of £35,427 per annum on completion of training & 5% individual commission. During training, which may last up to 6 months, the trainee salary is £21,741 per annum.

We’ll ensure you’re rewarded for your contribution with a competitive package that includes:

Contributory Final Salary Pension scheme
Free and reduced rate rail travel for you and your family, where applicable.
Generous holiday allowance
Hapi benefits package, offered to everyone at ScotRail

The post covers a 24-hour day and 7 day working (Sunday as overtime).

Your training, which will take place in Glasgow, will include induction, customer service, commercial skills, conductor rules, first aid, fire safety, disability awareness and conflict management - will be professionally delivered to give you all the tools to need to master this surprisingly varied and interesting job.

Selection process: Selected candidates will be invited to sit on-line assessment & attend classroom assessment. If successful, the next stage will be interview. The final stage for successful candidates will be a medical examination and drugs/alcohol screening. Appointees must submit at least two satisfactory references, Disclosure Scotland clearance and complete a six-month probation period.

Due to the nature of the post and rail industry safety requirements there are certain medical and fitness standards that you would be required to meet if successful.
