Job Introduction

It is a really exciting time to join the Reach family. We are now looking for a Facebook Community Reporter to join our network as part of our newsroom team at BirminghamLive.

The role is part of the Community News Project, a partnership between Facebook, the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and local publishers.

Previous journalism experience or education is not essential. We want confident people who care about their local communities and want to make a difference and have a positive impact. The purpose of the role is to find and report on the stories, issues and talking points that matter to specific communities and groups of people in and around this location, in a way which ensures as many people as possible discover, engage with and respond to our work.

We are especially keen to hear from people who believe they can help make our newsrooms more representative of the diverse communities we serve. Travelling to remote communities and speaking to residents will be an essential part of this role. Therefore a driving licence and access to own transport is essential.

So, who are we?

We are Reach Plc, you might not have heard of us but we have probably met without you even realising it. We are home to the UK and Ireland’s most iconic digital platforms, magazines and newspapers. From the Mirror, Daily Express and OK!, to our regional titles such as the Liverpool Echo, BirminghamLive and the Manchester Evening News (plus lots more), our brands and the stories we cover are as varied as our people. We help all kinds of people share experiences through our stories because we believe this is what makes us human.

Oh, and we should probably also mention that with a monthly readership of 47 million people, Reach is the largest commercial publisher in the UK. At Reach, not only will you feel better understood, you will also feel you understand other people better too.

This role is initially a 12 month fixed-term contract.

This role is home and hub based linked to our Birmingham Hub. We are therefore open to candidates based in and around Birmingham.

Key Responsibilities

What will the role involve?

  • Find and tell stories about specific communities and groups within the local area which engage as many readers as possible, and are of interest to those groups
  • Build a presence online, on social media and in real life to share stories with local communities once published, and engaged with readers about those stories
  • Tell stories in many different ways, including (but not limited to) written articles, pictures, videos and podcasts
  • Uphold Reach's policy around diversity and inclusion and work to ensure our values around non discrimination are upheld in everything we publish
The Ideal Candidate

Who are we looking for?

  • For applicants with no previous journalism experience or education, we are offering a journalism apprenticeship, which combines intensive training with on-the-job experience in the heart of the local community you’re reporting on
  • We welcome applicants with no previous journalistic experience for this pathway, and flexible arrangements will be considered for the right candidate
  • You will receive industry-leading digital journalism training on the job, as well as the gold-standard NCTJ journalism training to become a fully trained journalist
  • Candidates for this option need to have at least five GCSEs with maths and English at a C or above (or equivalent)
  • For applicants with previous journalism experience or education, we are offering trainee community reporter roles, where support will be provided to gain the necessary NCTJ qualifications to become a senior reporter. Successful candidates in their final year of journalism study will be able to start at the end of the academic course
