Job description
We are seeking a Registered General Nurse or suitably registered practitioner to undertake the physical health monitoring, offer well being, nutrition and lifestyle advice to with people experiencing a first episode psychosis. The successful candidate will work as part of the Northumberland and North Tyneside Early Intervention in Psychosis Teams (EIP).
As a community nurse you will be working within experienced and highly motivated clinical teams, you will be part of a service engaged in ensuring the best possible practice in contemporary mental health care. Your job role will be to undertake physical health checks for service users within the team and those new to the team who may be commencing on anti psychotic medication, liaison with the clinical team and GP practices to promote positive well being.

You will be responsible for monitoring the health care of service users under the care of the EIP teams which will include:
- Phlebotomy skills
- ECG
- offering advice and wellbeing support individually or in small groups i.e. smoking cessation, nutritional advice, exercise.
- liaison with health care professionals within the team and GP.
- administration of intramuscular injections
- Knowledge of antidepressants and potential physical health side effects.
- Mood stabilising medications and their effects on physical health.
- Clozapine – monitoring requirements (awareness of)
- Have a knowledge of interpretation of common blood results.
- Physical Health education & health promotion.
- Anti-psychotic depot injection medications and the required delivery and monitoring.
- The ability to deal with unpredictable situations which may include dealing with potentially aggressive service users as well as those with declining mental health issues.
The EIP teams work with individuals and their families who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis, the focus of the service is on recovery which includes mental and physical well being.
You will be an integral part of the team with unique skills, the team has mental health nurses, social workers, psychologists, support workers and psychiatrists who all have a role to play in the outcomes for the people we work with.
