Job description

St Martin’s Centre is a community hub located on the border of Byker and Walker in the east end of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The charity delivers a packed timetable of groups and services including daily activities for older people, children and families including an outstanding nursery, a befriending, wellbeing and volunteering project and emergency food and essential supply support

We now seek to recruit a talented individual to lead on the setup and running of our Community Café. The ideal candidate will be an experienced professional with a strong background in food management and a real passion for what they do.

Job title: Community Café Manager
Hours: 37.5 Hours
Salary: £25,000 per annum
Reporting to: Chief Executive
Responsible for: Catering Volunteers/staff

Responsibilities

· The setting up and running of the Café, delivering healthy food options at an affordable price.

· The supervision, training and upskilling of volunteers from the local community to work in the café alongside you.

Duty 1

Working closely with the Chief Executive you will lead on the initial set up of the cafe

Measures

· Working closely with the Volunteer Manager you will advise on the recruitment of volunteers and their training.

· You will agree with the Chief Executive (CE) on simple, healthy meals to include on the menu

· You will research local suppliers for quality and cost effectiveness.

· You will agree a pricing structure with the CE/Finance Director (FD).

· Working closely with the CE you will advise on the design of menus and literature.

· Working closely with the Admin Officer (AO) you will be responsible for marketing the café.

Duty 2

You will be responsible for the opening and day to day running of the cafe

Measures

· Ensure the café is open for business 5 days per week offering breakfasts and lunches.

· Provide ongoing support and training to catering volunteers.

  • Managing and contributing to the preparation, cooking and service of food and beverages.

· Continue to promote, advertise and initiate promotions to attract new customers.

· Within capacity you will offer and promote catering options to room hire bookings within the centre,

· Within capacity you will offer outside catering at a competitive rate.

Duty 3

Achieve the financial aims of the café and work within budgets set by the Finance Director

· Take responsibility for ensuring that all cash within the café premises is handled according to the centre’s financial procedures.

· Ensure tills are cashed up and balanced daily.

· Build and maintain relationships with suppliers to ensure the best deals.

· Take responsibility for all stock control and ordering.

· Take responsibility for all café stock and ensure stock is effectively rotated and wastage is minimised.

Duty 4

Ensure high levels of customer service and satisfaction

· Encourage a culture of excellent customer care and a ‘never say no’ ethos.

· Ensure decisions are made with the customer’s needs in mind.

· Support the Volunteer Manager to develop a system of training for new starters.

Duty 5

Adhere to Health and Safety and Food Hygiene requirements

· Ensure a high quality of health and safety, cleanliness and food hygiene in all catering areas and adhere to all legal regulations relating to food preparation, storage and service.

· Ensure a high pass rate for any food hygiene inspection.

· Devise and supervise a strict cleaning rota.

Duty 6

General requirements

· Organise regular kitchen team meetings to ensure good communication and team morale.

· Take part in full centre staff meetings.

· Be committed to St Martin’s Centre policies and procedures.

Essential Criteria

Personal Specification

At least 2 years’ experience of management within a food operation.

Experience and knowledge of food preparation and the standard needed to remain competitive.

level 3 Food Safety certificate

Knowledge and experience of line managing a team.

Knowledge and experience of managing health and safety, food hygiene and environmental health regulations.

Knowledge and experience of up-to-date allergen regulations.

Knowledge and experience of managing stock control.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Flexible, honest and reliable.

Respectful, confident and well presented.

Ability to make well considered decisions.

Ability to train staff in catering skills.

Ability to communicate effectively with staff and a wide variety of customers.

Positive, friendly and welcoming demeanour to create a great atmosphere for staff and customers.

Excellent timekeeping.

Ability to manage your own time effectively.

Self-motivated and proactive.
