- Solves complex technical problems in communications equipment.
- Maintains equipment.
- Makes changes to improvements in the communications systems.
- Works with local government and private businesses to repair equipment and report interference to communications division engineers.
- Instructs end users from various agencies in the operation of radio, telephone, video and computer equipment.
- Adheres to established schedules, and minimizes failures that result in outages.
- Prepares reports regarding work performed, and updates maintenance data and inventory information.
- Performs preventive maintenance and corrects problems or requests guidance effecting larger repairs.
- Submits reports using Excel spreadsheets, database entries, or electronic mail.
- Recommends methods or approaches to minimize down time and provide optimal service.
- Takes initiative to restore services or restores partial service until equipment and conditions allow for complete restoration, with full written reports of status.
- Orders equipment and parts to correct problems and returns.
- Responds to calls in scheduled call rotation. Responds on-site to emergency calls and marks in route within 15 minutes if on-site service is necessary.
- Repairs land mobile radio equipment; analog and digital microwave radio equipment; analog multiplex and digital channel bank equipment; radio dispatch computers and terminals; emergency generators and uninterruptible power systems; audio combining and switching; and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
- Performs tests to diagnose problems at remote sites to the system, network, subsystem, unit, assembly, or component levels as a result of digital or analog hardware failure or corrupted software.
- Uses computer to modify and install software, and to program, diagnose and repair microprocessor-based radios, microwave, and telephone equipment, and computer-based radio consoles.
- Orders repair parts.
- Requests tools and other service equipment. Incorporates asset management reporting in all phases of repair/replacement activities, shop and service vehicle inventories, new fixed and subscriber installations, and firmware/code plug upgrade sessions.
- Inventories and maintains spare equipment and parts.
- Organizes equipment and parts in service vehicles to minimize outages.
- Reports higher than expected failure rates on parts and equipment.
- Ensures that all test equipment receives periodic preventive maintenance and calibration.
- Maintains proper custody, use and care of assigned equipment and vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
- Working knowledge of advanced electronic theory and practices applicable to fixed and mobile microprocessor controlled Land mobile Radio and Microwave Point to Point systems of trunked, digital, and analog architecture, wired Key Service Utility (KSU), Digital Service Unit (DSU), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), and Primary Rate Interface (PRI) based telephone systems, vehicle based video capture systems, emergency power generator systems, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) remote site systems, personal computer laptops used for mobile data, and supporting environmental and physical plant equipment.
- Ability to install, repair, and maintain, equipment and/or software related to the above mentioned systems; to work alone or part of a team comprised of co-workers, other agency personnel, or the general public; to prepare and maintain entries into service record and asset management databases; and to lift 50 pounds unassisted.
- High School or GED equivalent; formal military or civilian trade school or equivalent work experience.
- Possession of a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operators License (GROL) or recognized equivalent within six months of employment required.
- Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license. Possession of a Registered Technician certification through the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) Pesticide Program within six months of accepting employment, and maintain certification for duration of employment.
- Must live within 50 miles of the radio shop where the employee is assigned.
- Serves on a rotating 24/7 emergency call-out schedule.
