The Communications Department is a core function within The Economist Group, supporting all parts of the media company. The team aims to raise awareness for primarily The Economist but also serves The Economist Group’s other business units including Economist Education, Economist Impact and Economist Intelligence. The Communications team also proactively builds and shapes the public profile of The Economist Group’s business leaders and annual performance. The team is active in a variety of channels including but not limited to digital and broadcast media relations, public relations, trade and editorial award entries and speaking engagements for The Economist Group’s editorial and business leaders.

We are seeking a Communications Manager to join our Communications team. The Communications Manager will report to the team’s Senior Vice President and will work closely with the global communications team to help grow awareness for primarily The Economist, Economist Impact initiatives and other business activities.

The successful candidate will possess a unique mix of research, writing and interpersonal skills.

  • Please note this is a Public Relations / Communications role, and Not Marketing or Production. The hired candidate will also be required to report to the London office - this is not a work from home or remote job.

Accountabilities:
In this role you will be expected to:

  • Provide support for the global communications team including department infrastructure and administration i.e. building media lists managing collateral (updating bios and photos, document development and management, press room maintenance); budget administration; event coordination
  • Draft weekly internal activity report
  • Track and maintain department metrics; generate reports as needed
  • Work with various team members to share materials with the global agencies with sensitivities to deadlines, news cycles
  • Draft background materials, bios, fact sheets and other press materials as needed
  • Maintain and manage department activity tracking systems to ensure consistent usage and data input across the global team. Work with the team to develop reports as needed
  • Work with VP and Senior Managers on awards strategy, entries and tracking across UK and US
  • Develop and maintain systems to coordinate and track speaking opportunities and engagements
  • Develop and maintain press lists for key subject areas
  • Management and tracking of comp list, digital subscriptions and mailings
  • Assistance with event management as and when needed
Experience, skills and professional attributes:
To succeed in the role you must be:

  • Proactive, reliable, responsible and accurate and pay close attention to detail
  • Flexible about working hours to support the global team
  • Familiar with media monitoring and database services such as Meltwater, Cision and Muck Rack
  • A so-called news junkie with interest in media relations and an understanding of the news creation process and news cycles
  • A confident communicator and presenter with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work within tight deadlines and possess excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Able to keep information confidential
  • A self starter with a positive and professional demeanor
  • Interested in politics, business, current affairs and global news with at least 2 years of experience working at a PR agency or in-house in a related communications role
  • Familiar with the G-suite of tools
  • Experienced with data analysis and reporting

  • A confident and professional manner when dealing with internal and external clients and stakeholders
  • An ability to operate in a global arena and work nimbly under pressure
