Position Description

The Communications Manager will manage all communications, storytelling, social media, traditional media and public messaging for the agency. Their time is spent directly on developing communications materials, managing communication channels, and supporting special projects and initiatives that support the agency’s mission.

Typical Duties

  • Designs, develops and implements key messages and communication strategies, including applying an equitable and accessible lens to all language use, communication channels, and ‘Who Is Receiving This Message?’ constituent considerations.
  • Evaluates how the impact of communications serves all communities to engage in the arts with specific attention to previously underserved communities in Nashville.
  • Ensures brand standards are consistent throughout the agency, including developing new communication visuals and documents as needed.
  • Develops and distributes press releases, media advisories and story pitches to local and national media outlets and trade publications; tracks media mentions and stories, and coordinates with TV/Film production companies regarding public art permissions.
  • Manages social media accounts, including creating and scheduling content and tracking engagement.
  • Writes and develops content for stakeholder newsletters.
  • Leads user design, content development, and content design for the agency website and manages contributions to Nashville.gov. Collaborates as needed with Information Technology Services on technical updates to website pages and accounts.
  • Responds to all agency media requests, conducts media interviews on behalf of the agency, and prepares team members and subject matter experts on talking points for interviews.
  • Develops and implements special events or special programs that engage or directly foster specific media interest.
  • Designs key publications such as the Annual Report and other documents.
  • Seeks continuous process improvements for the entire agency, through facilitating clear and open feedback, employee evaluations, and documentation of work performance.
  • Supports the Metro Arts Commissioners’ vision, Metro Nashville Diversity Officer’s guidelines, and the agency's work in developing and sustaining equitable practices across programs and policies, furthering the team commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

Minimum Qualifications

Employees would typically have a Bachelor's Degree plus five (5) years of professional experience in communications, public relations, administrative, government, or related positions.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Experience within communications, public relations or government fields
  • Experience with current practices in traditional media, social media, and digital platforms
  • Experience participating in television interviews and other public means of communications
  • Project management skills, including the ability to produce, track and manage multiple deliverables with overlapping deadlines
