The City of Santa Barbara Library department manages a location in Montecito on behalf of the County of Santa Barbara.
THE POSITION
The City of Santa Barbara Library Department is seeking a Detail-oriented and dynamic Circulation Supervisor. The current vacancy is for a 40 hour a week position that will primarily oversee the day-to-day operation of Circulation and Patron services and collaborate with the supervisor team on the development and implementation of system-wide policies and procedures especially as related to customer service and circulation.
Under general supervision, plans, organizes, assigns, and supervises work of library circulation unit; performs a variety of difficult and complex duties; and does other work as required. Position involves extensive public contact and excellent customer service skills. Position involves extensive staff training, ensuring policies and procedures are followed.
Duties Include: Supervises and schedules a library unit of part-time and full-time employees at Central and Eastside for patron service points; oversees shipment of physical materials between Library locations; trains and evaluates staff; organizes work flow; assigns duties, reviews completed work and solves work-related problems; evaluates and restructures unit as necessary; prepares reports; implements system-wide initiatives; performs complex patron and bibliographic record searches in computerized circulation system, interprets information and applies library policies; orders equipment and supplies; serves at the public service desk checking books in and out, issuing library cards, collecting fines and fees, answering phones and giving policy or directional information to library patrons; composes and types letters, compiles statistics, and keeps records and reports on work of the unit.
Hybrid/Flexible Work Schedule: This position has limited flexibility to work a hybrid schedule. Schedules are dependent upon operational needs and are subject to change. Details of teleworking considerations can be addressed during the interview process.

Knowledge of:
- Basic principles of supervision related to office team management, maintenance of records and supervision of a clerical staff, standard clerical procedures; standard library practice; and grammar skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to compose emails, letters, memos, and communicate workflows to all staff, and to review the completed work of staff; basic math to prepare statistical reports.
- Operating computer terminal, calculator, cash register/Point of Sale machine, and other office equipment with acceptable speed and accuracy. Onboarding and training new staff members.
- Operate and train others to use turnkey computerized circulation system including manipulation of functions, telecommunication linkages, and troubleshooting procedures; apply standard library operations policies and procedures as they relate to circulation and reserve functions; hire, train, schedule, and evaluate staff; assign duties and review completed work; independently perform difficult clerical duties and resolve problems; make procedure and policy decisions and recommend changes as necessary; tactfully answer questions from the public and staff and explain rules, regulations and procedural information; follow and provide written and oral instructions; present information and prepare reports in a clear and organized manner; prepare and update procedure manuals.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Four years of increasingly responsible experience providing library services, including one year of administrative and supervisory responsibility.
Training: Equivalent to an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited community college with major course work in library science, public administration, or a related field.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements: Applicant may be required to possess a regular California Driver's License at time of appointment.
