Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for dispatching Airport Police, fire, security, maintenance, transportation, operations, and parking personnel according to request for service and available manpower. Responsible for public information, radio communications, and security surveillance work at the San Antonio International Airport. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Shift schedule (0600-1400, 1400-2200, or 2200-0600) will be assigned after training. Weekends and Holidays

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises the daily operations of the communications center during assigned duty hours.
  • Assists in the training and evaluation of AICC Telecommunicator I.
  • Assists in the creation and implementation of educational and skill development training manuals, handout materials, visual aids, and program outlines.
  • Evaluates emergency and non-emergency requests and determines response disposition.
  • Dispatches Airport police, fire maintenance, transportation, operations, and parking personnel for appropriate request for services.
  • Operates fire and security systems and monitors CCTV cameras throughout the Airport for any notable incidents.
  • Conducts periodic checks on security checkpoint alarms and maintains logs in accordance with FAA regulations.
  • Performs registration checks on vehicle license plates, driver's license, and warrants through the computer aided dispatch system.
  • Generates San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) case numbers, on specific cases, and logs all pertinent information.
  • Maintains logs on lost and found property, persons and vehicles paged, vehicles impounded, shift change checklists, maintenance call back numbers, and incidents archived and/or burned to disc.
  • Provides information to the general public and tourists visiting the San Antonio International Airport.
  • Maintains and provides flight status information on cancelled or delayed flights.
  • Maintains current knowledge of facilities, buildings and airfield on San Antonio property.
  • Monitors CCTV cameras throughout the airport for any notable incidents.
  • Conducts periodic checks on security checkpoint alarms and maintains logs in accordance with FAA regulations.
  • Performs necessary notification on significant unforeseen events (i.e., bomb threats, aircraft emergencies, aircraft accidents, and severe weather warnings).
  • Archives and burns pertinent events to disc.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Three (3) years of public contact experience, with at least two (2) of those years spent as a dispatcher of law enforcement, security, or Aviation personnel.
  • Must meet the minimum requirements established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement for Telecommunicators.
  • Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Threat Assessment (STA) and a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) upon employment.
  • Must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Threat Assessment clearance upon employment.
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence
    Convictions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Telecommunicator License with Advanced or higher proficiency.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of all pertinent FAA, FAR, and FCC regulations, City ordinances, state laws, and any other applicable rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of all applicable departmental procedures and policies related to proper response in emergencies.
  • Knowledge of geographic features, streets, and buildings within the airport area served.
  • Knowledge of various types of computer formats and codes necessary to access, manipulate, and relay information.
  • Knowledge of dispatch office procedures, practices, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard radio broadcasting procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic alarm systems.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and radio using proper diction and a clear speaking voice.
  • Ability to reduce garbled, broken, or distorted transmissions into concise and accurate messages.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and logs and produce clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgment, and make and oversee sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job.
  • Ability to respond rapidly and effectively in emergency situations.
