BC Whales was founded in 2001 and is an innovative, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the research and protection of whales along the coast of BC. Our goal is to understand the acoustic tradition and habitat needs of whales through dedicated research programs and collaboration with coastal First Nation communities. We are looking for an experienced Communications Manager to join our team. Majority of work for this position can occur on a from home basis with the opportunity to join us at 2 unique and remote whale research stations in pristine regions of the BC coast. Trips into the field would be aimed to gain a greater understanding of the work being conducted to study whale behaviour, acoustic traditions and meet our team of scientists and technicians to ultimately be able to communicate our work effectively and accurately. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing a powerful and inspirational communications platform dedicated to whale conservation, effective outreach programs, creating and managing content for multiple channels, and monitoring and evaluating the success of campaigns. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in public relations, digital marketing, and brand management, as well as excellent writing and interpersonal skills.
Responsibilities:
- Create and implement communications plans for internal and external audiences.
- Establish and drive a strong communication platform between the public and research projects of BC Whales
- Prepare and manage all communications materials, including managing and writing website content and design
- Assist in the creation of digital, video, audio and print content for website and outreach programs
- Manage communication between various projects, partners, and indigenous communities
- Write press releases, speeches, and other communications materials.
- Manage social media accounts and campaigns.
- Monitor and analyze media coverage and industry trends.
- Provide strategic advice to senior management on communications initiatives.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key partners
Education and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or a related discipline. Other educational backgrounds may be considered with sufficient communications experience
- Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
- Excellent science communication and storytelling writing abilities
- Familiarity with social media platforms and social media marketing
- Working knowledge of content management systems, Word Press, Squarespace, and digital graphics production
- Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with communications technologies
- Understanding graphic design, layout, and website management
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro) or similar
Job Type: Part-time
Part-time hours: 15 per week
Salary: $25.00-$40.00 per hour
