Summary
The Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center (DLDCCC) has an immediate opening for a Senior Communications Associate. The Senior Communications Associate develops and oversees communications strategies to advance the research mission within the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center including grants editing and peer-reviewed journal article writing and editing, external and internal science communications among Cancer Center program members, web-based and social media strategies, public relations, and community outreach to build on the Cancer Center’s community outreach and enhancement activities as part of the greater goals mandated by our Cancer Center Support Grant funding mechanism and National Cancer Institute designation. Works with Cancer Center program leaders, Executive Committee members, and department Chairs to coordinate research strategies and foster research development in strategic focus areas. This position works closely with the Office of Communications on all communication strategies.
Job Duties
- Develops and writes scientific content for summarizing ongoing research and takes a lead role in scientific communications among Cancer researchers to enhance coordination of scientific projects within the Cancer Center.
- Reviews and edits scientific writings of Cancer Center members including grant applications and peer-reviewed journal articles for publication.
- Engages Cancer Center faculty directly in an effort to educate and coordinate research development strategies.
- Coordinates with the Office of Information Technology on web-based communications.
- Develops internal and external communications plans and web-based strategies for all programs and cores in the DLDCCC.
- Writes press releases, feature stories, internal communications, blog posts, and social media and web content.
- Ensures that all materials present a clear, unified, and positive image for the College and the Center; drafts, reviews, and edits messages to ensure they are clear, thorough, and on-brand.
- Monitors media coverage and develops media reports for the DLDCCC and its affiliates.
- Measures the success of specific communications and makes recommendations to improve effectiveness or increase reach.
- Edits and proofs content for style, technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency of brand message and tone across all touch points.
- Researches current trends that can be implemented strategically to reach the department’s communication goals.
- Interviews and meets with College faculty and staff to develop communications and community outreach opportunities.
- Utilizes analytics reports to provide direction concerning the improvement of visibility and reach for management use.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree. Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- Four years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Must be able to manage competing priorities, deadlines, and projects while maintaining a high-quality work product through supporting grants administration and executive leadership within an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center housed within the BCM academic medical center matrix.
- Must be sufficiently computer-literate and possess the necessary organizational skills and attention to detail to learn and master the functionality and workflow processes. Modernization and maximizing the efficiency of processes is a key component to supporting the Cancer Center Support structure.
