Job description
Role purpose:
As our Communications & PR Officer, you will work closely with the PR & Communications Manager, the Head of Global Communications & PR, and many other colleagues across the organisation to create and deliver organisational messaging, play a key role in campaign development, and other communications activities. You will help us ensure ShelterBox’s reputation is enhanced and protected, by creating high quality written materials and messaging, and helping to develop and deliver PR and communications campaigns.
This role will play a key part in:
- Raising awareness of ShelterBox’s vital work and the issues faced by those we support
- Encouraging audiences to support our work
- Positioning ShelterBox as a prominent expert in disaster relief and emergency shelter
Duties will include but not be limited to:
Communications campaign development, delivery, and evaluation
- Develop and deliver communications campaigns for both fundraising and awareness activities.
- Offer creative ideas and energy to campaign development, helping to raise the voices of the people we support.
- Support awareness raising communications projects and campaigns – including creating plans, timelines and evaluations.
- Help to analyse and monitor communications campaigns and strategy.
Communications planning, delivery, and evaluation
- Help to develop and deliver communications activities that support our strategic priorities, with the support of the PR & Communications Manager.
- Produce communications materials that ensure our messaging is consistent and powerful and that our reputation is enhanced and protected.
- Prepare and produce approved organisational messaging about our international programmes work, including major disasters – for use by fundraising and communications teams in the UK and internationally.
- Prepare high quality copy for a range of uses, including reports, campaign plans, messaging and FAQs, media briefings, and comments. This will include supporting our digital team with copy for the website, blogs, video scripts, , and social media posts.
- Support with the production of reports including the Annual report, the Reach and Impact report, and updating organisational Q&As.
- Update key organisational stats and key messaging and produce internal updates during major disaster responses/appeals
- Keep comms plans and other resources updated, ready to roll-out quickly during times of major disaster.
- Offer creative ideas and support planning for communications activities.
- Ensure communications activities are evaluated to determine success and improve performance.
- Provide surge capacity support for our Social Media Officer with social media during major disasters and campaigns – including drafting copy and posting on our channels.
- Support the PR & Comms Manager in ensuring that our work is communicated and understood internally across all ShelterBox teams – in the UK and internationally.
Media engagement
- Help to maximise media opportunities for ShelterBox across national and regional, print, digital, and broadcast media, resulting in positive coverage for ShelterBox.
- Prepare and use a variety of high quality, effective PR tools – including press releases, comments, features, and letters to editors.
- Draft media briefings, quotes and comments.
- Proactively pitch stories and spokespeople in support of planned campaigns and major disasters.
- Secure media interviews and help manage media logistics during major disasters.
- Help manage the PR inbox and track incoming media requests.
- Help manage media cuttings and analyse for trends and KPI reporting.
- Support on organisation-wide media training.
- Identify and develop media relationships.
- Keep across the news agenda, spotting opportunities to comment and reactively pitching stories.
Other duties
- Undertake any other duties that are commensurate with the post.
- Carry out the duties of post in accordance with the ShelterBox’s policies and procedures on Health and Safety and take responsibility for ensuring personal health and safety.
- Work flexibly and out of hours as needed, prioritise workload, and work effectively as part of a team.
